Jumbunna, Victoria Census information - please
« on: Monday 09 August 10 09:36 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I recently discovered that my relative Jemima, and her husband Emmerson Pattinson moved to Jumbunna, Victoria, after emigrating from Durham, England to Australia around about 1886.  Please could someone tell me if there is any census information for this family?  They had three daughters: Sarah, Rose and Jemima and I would be very interested to hear of what became of them, if that is possible.

Thanks very much.

Michael

Electoral rolls:

The only Jemima PATTINSON showing in Victoria 1903-1954 is:

1924
Jemima Pattinson, home duties, Malcolm St, Quarry Hill (Bendigo).  No other PATTINSONs at that address.

No sign of Emmerson or Rose PATTINSON and too many Sarahs!

Thanks for that information Judith.

I think this is probably Jemima's youngest daughter that you have found there.  I wonder what HOME DUTIES means.

I am not sure what years the census is done in Australia.  In England it is done every ten years.

Thanks again for your help.

Kind regards,
Michael

Hi Michael,
they don't publish the census in Australia.
We have Electoral Rolls available for election years 1903 through to 1954.
Only other way to find someone is BMDs and Victoria doesn't have any published online BMDs, unfortunately. You can search for a name but you then have to pay to view anything found, and it may or may not be who you're looking for.
There may be someone here who has access to files published on CDs.

Thanks Leonie and Merlin for that information.  That's great.  I didn't know about the census or the electoral rolls.  I am going to order the death details for Jemima and Emmerson.  It's strange that Jemima's mother is recorded as EMMERSON when it actually was HOVELLS.  I probably have relatives out there in Australia that I haven't a clue about, as I am sure that one of the girls, Sarah, Rose or Jemima would have had children.

Thanks again for all your help and so quick too!

Kind regards,
Michael
