Compted with thanks Mary Currie- marriage
« on: Thursday 03 March 11 10:16 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if anyone has information on this Mary Currie, her marriage to John Lauder in or about 1850, the grandfather of Sir Harry Launder.

There is a IGI posting,  for the christening of John Currie Launder in 1851 in Musselburgh, not happy to trust that.

Many thanks

Hi Ugo

Have you tried checking for the family in censuses? Often a useful place to start for information and dates. IGI is a great resource, but where you have entries showing as submitted member entries, you need to take some care as you know until you are able to verify elsewhere.

If I have the right family in the censuses, I think the marriage between John Lander and Mary Currie is probably earlier c. 1840.

I think this might be them in 1861:

John Lander 47, Joiner (master) b. Edinburgh
Mary Lander 43 b. England
Isabella Lander 16 b. Edinburgh
John Lander 9 b. Edinburgh
Jane M Lander 6 b. Portobello, Midlothian
Thomas Mungal 1 boarder b. Edinburgh

Address:    2 Ramsay Lane, Portobello, Duddingston, Midlothian

You can find the family on the 1851 census on http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl - just search for John LAUDER in Midlothian, occupation hotel keeper.

Can't easily see the family in 1841.

If Mary Currie died in Scotland, her death cert should include full details on her parents, including mother's maiden name. There is a submitted entry for her on IGI:

Mary Curry chr.    29 Oct. 1810 in Kirkwhelpington, Northumberland, England
Death on 4 Feb. 1870
Marriage to John Lauder c. 1840 in  Edinburgh

Something to work from  :)

Which line are you following back to John Lauder and Mary Currie? This link (there are many) regarding Sir Harry Lauder (1870-1950) has him born in Portobello, original name Hugh MacLennan www.encyclopedia.com/topic/Sir_Harry_Lauder.aspx

Thank you Monica.

The Census looks good, I was hoping to find a Mary Currie with family born in Scotland, its look like most of the postings I have seen for the family are correct.

Hi there, I am Sir Harry Lauder's Great Granddaughter Christine. I am sure some of the Currie or the McLennan family have a headstone right next to Sir Harry's. headstone, If you want I can have a look again, I can't quite remember the names as I am getting on a bit now. Looks as if the info you have been given is quite accurate so far. If you want to know more about our family relationship with the Lauders, you could go to Answers.com and type in Did Sir Harry Lauder have two sons. From there you will see a wee story about our family. Kind regards from Christine.

Hi Christine,
You know when someone tells you that a famous name is connected, I could not find any truth in this. So sorry to say we have no connection to the great man.
regards Joan

This link (there are many) regarding Sir Harry Lauder (1870-1950) has him born in Portobello, original name Hugh MacLennan www.encyclopedia.com/topic/Sir_Harry_Lauder.aspx

I don't know where that came from. His birth is registered as Henry Lauder, plain and simple. It is also indexed as Henry McLennan, because he was born 22 days before the marriage of his parents, but Hugh doesn't come into it at all.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Dear Joan, I Thought I was helping, however,I would like to let you know that my  family have proof. I worked along side William Wallace the author for many years and he knew and wrote books about Harry Lauder. Its my family who tend Harry Lauder's grave. I don't really know what you thought I was looking for when I answered, I wish I hadn't now. When you post on a site like this you have to be prepared to consider all options that people put your way. You are obviously unable to accept that Harry Lauder started out as an ordinary man and you see him only as a great man. You have offended me greatly, please do not reply as I have no further interest in you. Regards Christine.

Dear Christine,  please I did not want to upset you, my reply was written badly, A few years ago I was given the idea that a your relative was connected to the our Currie family,  when researching our family history it's always exciting to fine a famous name, there was no connection I could not find the link, and closed the subject.

In the past I have been given help on many subjects on this site and have been grateful for the help.
Sorry if you feel offended it was not my intention.
Joan
