I believe now that Jane is the daughter of William James and Jane? On 1881  census Jane (mother) is a widow and her daughter Jane is living with her. Melbourne. Jane (mother) is 61 and daughter is 20. I have found the death of a William  James who died Dec. Qu. 1872. Not sure of who Jane is and wondering if Jane was their only child

So Frederick James (the original subject of this thread) is no longer of interest?

Perhaps you start from the beginning and tell us exactly what you are seeking, and what you already know?

Melbourne, Derbyshire comes under the Shardlow district.

There are 2 births for a Jane James in Shardlow, between 1856 and 1861:

Mar qtr 1859
Dec qtr 1860

The 2nd Jane James (1860) is the daughter of William & Jane James of New Yard Melbourne (RG09/2489/60/13).

!

It seems KGarrard found the family a few posts back

It seems (if of course you have the correct jane for your research) that you just tried to make her "fit" with Frederick and wife

It looks like the Frederick James who married 1856 derby district -married Elizabeth Boden -not jane Davy

this seems to be Jane from 1881 census - mother Jane -and her siblings and parents

I did more research also I found William and Jane's marriage in 1838 .In fact there are 2 results on Family search  One has them marrying 18 Oct 1838 and the other is Sept 23 1838. It has her last name as Willm But  2 of the children are Mary Wyln and Joseph Joseph Wyln James .Thomas b1842  has the spelling Wilmn .Your info is much appreciated All I have to do now see if I can find the birth of William and Jane

Tut! Tut! Spelling!!  ;D ;D

Just looked at the original indexes for the marriage.
Jane's surname is typed up as WILLN.

Strange!
It seems to be a more common mistake today, than it was in years gone by?  ???

I have yet to find a mis-spelled Garrad on a census.
One set of divorce papers, yes.

Oh well, I have learned to live with it!!

If only I could lay claim to the fortune of the former Crown Jewellers (Garrad & Sons) or the record-deck manufacturers?!?!  :D
