Cain / Kane
« on: Wednesday 02 March 11 21:21 GMT (UK) »
Hello, I am trying to trace a William (Jane) Cain B 1823 ish in Auchenloo, Derry.  I know from his death cert that his parents were John Cain (Fruit dealer) and Sarah McLaughlin.  He first appears on the 1861 Scottish census, but I know nothing about his time / family in Ireland.

Could someone please point me in the right direction as to where I might find out some more info?  I've tried familysearch but not yet got anything back (if I have done it correctly!!).  Many thanks

The townland is probably Aghanloo, outside the town of Limavady (formerly known as Newtownlimavady). The information you are looking for is before the start of civil registration so you'll need to rely on any existing church records.

Have a look at Introduction to Irish Records and My Ancestor came from Ireland - where do I start?.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

There are a couple of individuals named 'John Kane' recorded in the 1831 Derry census as living in the parish of Aghanloo, in the barony of Keenaght, county Londonderry:

John Kane, in the townland of Ballycastle, Aghanloo, Keenaght, Co. Londonderry

John Kane, in the townland of Grannagh, Aghanloo, Keenaght, Co. Londonderry {a 'James Kane' was living in the same townland, next door to John, and may have been a relation}

I got this information from Bill MacAfee's transcription of the 1831 Derry census. The link to this website is http://www.billmacafee.com/index.htm
The original census would tell you the number of the people within each household {including servants, if they had any}, their gender, and their religion. However, only the head of household's name is recorded.

Incidentally, a 'Thomas Kane', son of John Kane and Sarah McLoughlin, is recorded as being baptised in Magilligan R.C., in Tamlaghtard parish, in 1835. Roman Catholics in Aghanloo would have worshiped at Magilligan parish church; Magilligan is located just to the north of Aghanloo.

Thank you for finding this information out for me, I'm very grateful.  Could you point me in the direction of where I might find an older map of the area, so I can work out where the church might be or if it still exists?  Many thanks.

Hi,
the church is still there and is called St. Aidans. If you go on Google maps and enter Duncrun Road. Travel south-west along it until you are just below Oughtymoyle. The short road going east from this point leads to St Aidans.

Hello!

If you are able to find anything about John Cain (a fruit dealer) please let me know, as  he is also at the top of my family tree!  His wife is Sarah McLaughlin and they were from Ireland, with one of their children being William Kane, who married a Mary Jane Cullen.  William was born in Auchan Loo Derry.

My grandmother's maiden name is Kane, and i have traced her father's side back to John.

I also know a Katherine McGuiness that was married to an Andrew McGowan (i think that was on another of your posts), but I am at a dead end with their names.

Sincerely,

Kerry Reilly

Hi,
As Aghadowey said earlier "Auchan Loo" is probably the parish of Aghanloo ( nowadays pronounced Analoo) just to the north of the town of Limavady on the east bank of the River Roe.
