I have discovered that my maternal g.mother Ellen (or Elinor) CRUMPLIN, nee GOULD, was born in Elvetham in 1868, but can't get any further;  can anyone help?

Hi Edna,

Do you have her marriage certificate?  This would give her father's name.  There is a birth registration in Hartley Wintney RD in Dec 1867 for an Ellen Taphouse Gould, ref 2c 163.

I am having a look for Ellen and I just wondered if you have a little more
information for us.
Can you supply her husbands first name.
Also although she was born in Elvetham, do you know
where she was living in an older age?
I might have found two potential Ellens but without a little
extra help dont know if they are correct.
Both have Fathers called William and the Mothers are either
Mary Ann or Julia.
Do you have any names that run through your family at all?

Ellen Taphouse Gould was my grandmother, her birth certificate gives no father but Ann as her mother.
I have not been able to find her on the census, but it is rumoured that she either ran away, or was farmed out, to a family in the New Forest;  if so, I wonder how/when she came back to Hartley Wintney and met William Crumplin, my grandfather.
I wondered if the forename Taphouse was a crafty way of getting the father's name on to the birth certificate;  does anyone have any knowledge or experience of this practice?

Although her birth certificate gives no name for father, her marriage certificate gives her father as Thomas Gould, but I can find no trace of him.

The witnesses  were Charles Crumplin (I think he was a brother, large family, have not yet checked) and Kate Turner;  the only Kate Turner I can find was a 17 year old servant in Yately.  I am struggling, any help gratefully accepted!

The lack of a father's name on her birth certificate tends to point to her being illegitimate.  The father's name is on the marriage certificate may be made up to save her embarassment, especially since you cannot find any trace of him.

Taphouse may have been her real father's name; women often did put the name in the child's name.  Equally, it could be a red herring.

I have looked at the PRs and Ellen was not baptised at Elvetham, Hartley Wintney, Winchfield or Fleet

There is a Baptism at Elvetham
3AUG1851 ANNE GOULD d/o JAMES & CHARLOTTE Lab Elvetham

She is with James and Charlottte at Elvetham in 1861

There is an Ellen Gold aged 13 at St Pancras Chichester Sussex . She is a nursemaid and says she was born Hartley Hants. She is not on the Baptism register for H/W.

There are no Taphouses in Elvetham

You could be in for a long search

I thought again about the name Taphouse and, in the next census, discovered a Solomon Taphouse, 18 year old private soldier, listed under Hartley Wintney ..........  the plot thickens!

I have searched in a few different sites for Ellen born 1868 but can't find one for that year.  Either side of that year but not exact.  If the Anne that Vic found for you is the Mother of Ellen, then she would have been only 17 when she gave birth to Ellen in 1868. Maybe thats why she wasnt Christened or it was just an unfortunate miss off of the register.
I have looked for William George Crumplin and there are two living in H/W in the 1881 census.  Maybe thats how Ellen met him as you mention you do not know why she came back from being a maid? I did find the wedding in 1895.
I thought I had found Ellen in the 1881census working  as a maid.  There is a Ellen Gould working there aged about 15 which would make her the right age. She is working in a big house of Lord Tennyson the Poet Lauriate.
The soldier aged 18 sounds a good guess, but you didnt put what year the census was when you found him. In 1868 the British army was in Abyssinia now known as Ethiopia so he might not have had time to marry Anne or put his name down as Father had he been taken away in the Army??
Lots of scenarios could have happened. I did look for the surname Taphouse and there are a few men in the Hampshire area but its also a place in Cornwall.
