I've now had a chance to look at his record, and at the time of the Crimean War he was serving on HMS Trident, a 6 gun paddle sloop, engaged in anti slavery patrols off the SE coast of America.
As I suspected, his first posting in the CG Service was to Union Hall, Cork. On the 23 December 1866 he was sent to Dawlish then on 2 April 1867 to Budleigh Salterton, then Dartmouth, and finally Torquay, from where he was pensioned. You should be aware that although during his CG Service his name is against that of a ship, this was only for administrative purposes, the men still worked at land based CG Stations. However, they were still expected to undertake training cruises on this vessel, and should the need have arisen, manned this ship in time of war.
According to his record he received the RN Long Service Good Conduct Medal on 11 June 1875, only two years after CG Men became eligible for this award.
