Transcription query?
« on: Wednesday 02 March 11 02:04 GMT (UK) »
I found an ancestor in Linlithgow, Abercorn Parish, in the 1841 census.  She would have been widowed right around this time and her husband was a blacksmith (whose death I have not found).

Since they married and were from Kinross I was surprised to find her here.  I am trying to understand the address on the census - Railway huts at ? - thinking this could give me some more clues.  Is it likely that a blacksmith would be working for the railway for instance?  I am afraid I am showing much ignorance of the profession in that era.

Thanks in advance
Sharon

Hi Sharon  :)

The place is Priestinch, I think.

I'm sure blacksmiths would have been much in demand for railway work - there's a lot of iron that goes into putting a line together, keeping the machinery working, horses shod, etc.

Someone else with more knowledge than I have will no doubt fill you in!  ;D

Cheers
Prue

Thanks for this Prue!  A bit of googling led me to some old rootschat entries on Priestinch as well.
