Research in Jersey
« on: Tuesday 01 March 11 17:01 GMT (UK) »
I have just contacted Jersey record office to ask if they have records about a couple of families as I want to visit and dont want to waste a long journey. I did this last year in Guernsey and they were most helpful. Im not sure about Jersey as I had an e-mail back telling me the cost per hour. I want to do the research myself but I have been given the impression that a researcher has to do it. Is this so?Can I just go (Im a member of the History Society, though for not much longer if this is their attitude) and ask the archivist to point me in the right direction. My husband(not a member) would also help me. Before booking a flight etc I would like to know if it is easy to do your own research as it is in UK.Do you have to book a slot etc
Any guidance would be of help.

Hi Ringrose

I presume you are talking about Jersey Archive. Anyone can go in and do their research; there is no charge and it has no connection with the "History Society". They will do research for people who cannot attend for which they charge as do the CIFHS. The Archive is open Tuesday to Thursday, 9am to 5pm.

You can also visit the Société Jersiaise library by prior appointment for non-members.

Thanks Stewart.I think it was unfortunate that a general email was sent about research fees etc.
I have since had a very helpful letter later  and feel I must apologise for jumping the gun  so to speak.
