Help!! Translating Army Records
« on: Tuesday 01 March 11 12:01 GMT (UK) »
Hi, just come across Army Records 10 pages for John Copeland (3x grandfather) b/1811 Aberdeen Scotland, joined the 84th in 1830 at Liverpool, seems a colourful character,Court Martialled twice and imprisoned, once with hard labour, desertion and drunkenness.
Discharged in 1854 at Chatham on what looks like medical grounds, but can't read it, so hoping someone can.

Hi Belle,
You may well find your images are removed because of copyright (stated at the bottom of the images). I think if you wish to crop small excerpts from the image though, then that's OK.

Medical report reads:
"This is to certify that corporal John Copeland of the 84th regiment labours under chronic cough and dyspnoea caused by climate and military service and not the result of indulgence in the use of intoxicating liquors or other vices as far as is known here, in consequence of which he is rendered incapable of further military service."

PMO's opinion reads:
"I am of opinion that John Copeland is, in consequence of chronic cough and difficulties of breathing, unfit for further service."

The one word which is dyspnoea in one opinion means difficulty in breathing, someone's been using medical terminology.

Just to confirm it, the PMO's opinion says the same thing in layman's language.  :)

I did google that word and came up with Dysphonia which is a voice disorder that can affect breathing brought on by stress and other things such as cancer. Seems i may have missed judged him thought he was discharged for miss behaving as he  had a checkered live in the Army.

Has any one had a look at the 2nd document?

Thank you all for your help so far.
