Bungay lookups - GIL(L)
« on: Monday 28 February 11 15:44 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Please could you look to see if there are any references to GIL or GILL in Bungay between 1650 and 1660.

I am interested in the family of NATHANIEL GIL, rector of Burgh-next-Aylsham who spent the Commonwealth years in Bungay. He and his wife were having children before they left Burgh. I also wonder if his wife, MARY GIL nee Stone, might have died there.

Thanks, Sally.

Hi Sally,

I've checked the Bungay St Mary registers and I'm afraid there is no Gil or Gill there.

I don't have the registers for Bungay Holy Trinity for the right period.

Regards

Elvina

Thanks Elvina,

I've not tried using Sfk material before - all mine are Nfk/Cambs - do you know if there are any records online or any other ways of accessing them short of going to Ipswich which I am unable to do??

Taa, sally.

Hello Sally

I have had a look at the Suffolk Burial Index for you.

Nothing listed for Gil/Gill in Bungay at that time but there are 8 entries for GILL in Woodbridge starting:

Goody GILL wi of Thomas 1651 Woodbridge St Mary
Elizabeth GILL wi of Thomas 1653     do

Woodbridge not far from Burgh so there could be a connection but I could see nothing in the way of a burial of a Mary GIL(L) that would match your search.

Nothing online in the way of parish registers etc for Suffolk other than sites such as Family Search but Suffolk Family History Society does have a range of CD's etc to purchase & I believe Suffolk RO can supply some PR's for a fee.
