Joseph JONES and Eliza, Paterson NSW 1851
« on: Monday 28 February 11 10:11 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find details of Joseph Jones, tinsmith of Paterson, NSW who married Eliza (supposedly Berry) and had a daughter Phoebe in 1851. I can find record of Joseph Jones, convict, who married Eliza Coleman in 1849, but cannot find whether this is the same person. Any help greatly appreciated!

Hi there,

Do you have a transcript for that 1849 marriage ... where was the service conducted? Does it give any information about his age, parents etc...

Do you have a transcript of your Joseph Jones death certificate .... does it say how long in the colonies, his age, where born, when/where married, number of children and names of those living etc...

Have you looked through trove for information about the tinsmith at Paterson ... sometimes there's very good clues

Re the chap who married Eliza Coleman in 1849 ... you say he was a convict .... what record does that come from?  Does it show any other info re his conviction/sentence/Ticket of Leave/Certificate of Freedom etc...

Fingers crossed,

Cheers,  JM

Re that 1849 marriage .... was it at Houghton, ... this would be near Paterson.

Re Joseph Jones ... NSW Electoral Roll 1870 has a Joseph Jones, as a leaseholder at Coulston, definitely Paterson country, alas, no occupation given on those early rolls   :(

Thankyou  majm and Merlin - I 'think' this is my Joseph and Eliza Jones, but the family always said Joseph's wife was Eliza Berry (and didn't mention convict status!!!!)....that's why I am not sure.
I can't find anything on Trove about them and cannot find immigration records for Eliza Coleman or Berry.
I do have some details of the Joseph Jones who came on Strathfieldsaye (from Ancestry)
I'm still searching!
Cheers, Julie

Hi there,

At the ONLINE index of the NSW State Records Office, there's a Joseph Jones who was a convict, ex the Strathfieldsay arriving 1836.  His Ticket of Leave was issued in 1844 (44/1958) in the Paterson District.  He had been tried at the Derby Quarter Sessions.

That same chap received his Colonial Pardon on  1 Feb 1849 (CP 49/447)

I think there's a very strong possibility that would be the right Mr Jones who was Phoebe's dad, to match up with Merlin's posts  ;D

Cheers,  JM
