Robert BLACK b. C1837 Scotland – Missing from Queensland
« on: Monday 28 February 11 06:37 GMT (UK) »

I am searching for my GG Grandfather Robert BLACK who arrived in Moreton Bay in Queensland AUST, aboard ship ‘Alfred’ in 1858. He married Elizabeth SYME/SIME/SIM in Brisbane on
9/7/1859.  She was born on 30/3/1942 (as SYME) at Aberdour Scotland and arrived in Moreton Bay with her family aboard ship ‘Irene’ in 1858. They had six children viz.,

Elizabeth b. 17/10/1860 Brisbane QLD d. 6/1/1862 Brisbane
James b. 20/8/1862 Brisbane d. 18/8/1944 Cairns QLD
Janet b. 12/10/1864 marr.?? d.??
Alexander b. 8/10/1866 Dundathu QLD d. 6/4/1916 Cairns (my Great Grandfather)
Robert b. 17/2/1871 d. 7/11/1919 Charters Towers QLD
William George b. 14/12/1876 marr. ?? d.??

Elizabeth passed away on 8/1/1877 at Dundathu near Maryborough QLD, after the birth of William George. Robert presumably raised his children with the assistance of his late wife’s family who were sawmillers. He worked with Elizabeth’s uncle William SYME/SIME/SIM and his partner William PETTIGREW at their Dundathu sawmill, which had a checkered existence surviving fires and floods, eventually succumbing in 1893 during the great flood. William SIM died in Robert BLACK’s arms after a logging accident  at Tin Can Bay QLD in 1873 and Robert built a 35-foot steamboat from hoop pine, which was plentiful, and named it ‘Elizabeth’ in 1879.

After that, I have found no evidence of Robert or his children Janet and William George.

I’d love to hear from any descendants of any of the above family or any one who can help knock down the wall.

It looks like him  and feels like him,so I'll order a copy of his Death Registration to help with finding his birth details in Scotland.

Thank you Merlin and Aussie1947 for your information.

Ciao

Alexander Black is my Great Grandfather and Robert is my Great-Great Grandfather.  Robert did arrive in Moretn Bay 1858 aboard the Alfred all details as read are pretty correct. His fathers name was James and his mothers was i believe jane or june.  Details of his location in Australia are very hard to trace. The ship sailed from Liverpool in June 1858. I would be interested to see what info you have collected on Alexander and families as both my cousin and i are doing family research on Robert.

Hi, nqchook.

I'm in Cairns about 2km from the pioneer cemetery, if you need a photo of Alexander's burial plot/headstone for your family history let me know.

Gerry

I went to the Cairns Pioneer Cemetery today but unfortunately there was no burial position found for Alexander Black.  He appears on the list of burials for the cemetery as grave No 2300 but 2300 wasn't on the map for the cemetery indicating confirmed burial names.  There were many many names with grave numbers but not marked on the site map.

I'll contact the Cairns Council tomorrow and see what more I can find out.

Gerry
