Hi. Your post was enlightening for me, but not quite in the way I was expecting, as you've highlighted an error in my research. I've mixed up a Mary LAKE (Born approx 1836) and Mary Ann LAKE (Born approx 1833)...

This bit of my family tree was pretty much the first I looked at about 3 years aso and I've never thought to question it since. In my naivety, I wasn't thorough enough with fact checking, and discounted some red flags. I think was a bit excited about the potential Gibraltar and Ireland connection.
Re-doing my research last night, my family line goes back to Mary LAKE, who married James CALLABY on 25th December 1860. Where I had it wrong before is with her parents. It now looks like they are Anguish Thomas LAKE and Lucy SMITH; not Tobias LAKE and Jane...
I'm not sure how/if the two LAKE families are connected.
I also seem to have "traded" a solider (Tobias), for a criminal, Anguish

. It looks like he was imprisoned twice. I have yet to track him down on the 1851 census too, as he isn't with the rest of the family - maybe he was locked up a third time...
