Please help with dating this photograph

Hi there,

We have come across a photograph a few years back. My father believes its our German relatives however it could be our Irish, Spanish, Uk based ancestors. I cannot find anything, web wise, for the girls dress or for what the lady is wearing.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated!

Hi Rhiannon and welcome to Rootschat! 

I can't help on the dating front I'm afraid, but I did notice it looks as if the people have been superimposed onto a different background.  Look particularly at the top of the young man's head, it looks like it's been cut from another photo.  That's probably of no significance and no help at all but I thought I'd mention it!

Heather, it does look odd doesnt it. My parents had it restored about 10 years ago, hence why it looks superimposed!

I do not think the lad has been added. If you look below you can see his right foot.

The older woman does not seem to have a ring on her left hand but may have one on her right. I was told years ago by a Polish lad that they wore family rings on the left hand and wedding rings on the right and maybe they did the same in some parts of Germany.

Behind seems to be a roof so are they in a building on a hillside?

I would guess that the roof in the original photo was too 'busy' and the people didn't show up clearly enough against it.  It looks as though the people have been cut out and superimposed on a more regular and pale background. 

Is this photo a new version (done 10 years ago) and does the original still exist?

I was wondering about her ring so thank you for sharing that, thats excellent information as we were under the impression this may be relatives on our German side.

We have the original but my Dads got in framed on the wall. Its exactly the same but this restored picture looks wierd because the two faces at the back have been lightened and their edges played about with.

Does anyone have any idea on where the clothing came from? The girl looks very modern but the lady looks quite boring!
