Jane Howe/key
« on: Saturday 26 February 11 13:40 GMT (UK) »
Please can anyone help to find a Jane Howe married name Key born on the 20th April 1841 in Camberwell.  Father John Howe mother Jane Batchelor.  I can find her christening in Woolwich at St Mary Magdalene  but no birth certificate.

She married Keeling Key and is on the census until 1881 then nothing.  Keeling died in 1886.  There was a son John Keeling key.

Many thanks Halifax

Hi

John Howe left a will proved at the Principal Registry 22nd April 1872. He died 21st March 1872. His beneficaries might be trackable through death duty registers held at The National Archives.

Thank-you Valda for that information.  I will try to trace  the will.
John Howe  was a Parliamentary Agent in the 1850`s and  then as a Gentleman on other records.  He was my 2x Great Grandfather.
Another question ---it says on the census born at sea about 1791.

I saw you can trace  births at sea from the 1850`s but is it impossible so early?

Many Thanks again Halifax.

Hi

There is a guide at the top of the London and Middlesex boards on wills. The first part will help with information for obtaining a copy of the will. The last section deals with Death Duty Registers.

1791 is well before the start of civil registration 1st July 1837 and the state's growing involvement in birth registration.
If his father was in the British military then the eventual baptism might be before a military chaplain and therefore in the General Registry Office Overseas (army) index.

If his father was in the East India Company military or working as a civil servant for the East Indian Company then the baptism might have taken place in India (if an outward journey). If so the baptism will be held in the Indian Office records at the British Library some of which are online (though earlier are less likely to be online)

If the journey was one where the family were returning home then the baptism may simply have occurred wherever they lived on their return.
