The Colombo Extract is described thus:

It hath an aromatic smell, but is disagreeably bitter, and slightly pungent to the taste; is supposed to be almost a specific in the cholera morbus, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, bilious fever, indigestion, and most other disorders of the stomach and bowels. It is slightly sedative, corroborant, and antiseptic. The bark resists the putrefaction of animal flesh; and the root exceeds it in preserving the bile from putridity, or in correcting the putrescency which has already commenced. As it is not heating, it may be used in hectic fevers. A tincture of this root in brandy is a very useful remedy for moderating the retchings during the first months of pregnancy. Dr. Cullen says it is a strong and agreeable bitter, and he has employed it in many instances of dyspepsia with great advantage. In checking vomiting it has frequently succeeded; but he has found it to fail even where there seemed to be a redundancy of bile; nor, in correcting the acrimony and putrescency of the bile, has it appeared more powerful than other bitters.

1918 was the glass bottle!!!

Colonist, Volume LX, Issue 14663, 18 March 1918, page 3

"The statue of John Robert Godley, which, for 50 years stood, in the centre of Cathedral Square, Christchurch, has been placed in position in its new site on the northern grass plot of the Cathedral grounds. There was a small gathering to witness the ceremony of cementing the statue on its base. Before the statue was lowered into its bed of cement, a bottle was inserted in a small hollow under the statue. The bottle contained a parchment bearing the following statement in Indian ink "This statue of John Robert Godley, executed by Thomas Woolner, R.A., was erected in the west side of Cathedral Square by the Provincial Government of Canterbury, and unveiled by the late Sir Charles Christopher Bowen, K.C.M.G., on August 6, 1867. It was moved to this site in March, 1918."   The statement was signed  by the Anglican Bishop of Christchurch, the (Mr H. Holland); the Town Clerk, and the City Surveyor."

Did you see the glass bottle?  kind of light greenish - let me see if there's a pic up...

Shows both - but under lights you could see the top of the bottle had been broken...

Just catching up, I have been out of action due to my satellite being out, affected by the quake.

Two nights ago, I had a pleasant surprise while watching tv, one of the places in OZ was mentioned in raising money for Christchurch, they were interviewing someone, the name seemed familar, then it clicked it was one of the names in my tree.  They were ex-kiwi.  Must admit it was nice to seem them in the flesh instead of a photo.

One of our neighbours, their niece worked for the CTV, they were trying to make contact with her for six hours and were getting worried when no reply.  Turned out she was out in the field doing interviews.

Cheers

Cylinder again

Being that there was no mention of the metal cylinder in 1918 one would then deduce it was put in, in 1933.  Paperspast does not go up to 1933 though to double check  :(

Now back to your regular transmission...  ;)

Further to last nights one sided interview on Campbell Live. he started of his program with an apology for his unprofessional performance, he had spoken personally to Ken Ring and apologised. He also offered him the opportunity to come back again and give his story, needless to say he refused.

Some years ago I was watching and interview on TV1 with Dennis Connor by Paul Holmes. Denis quite rightly walked out and I shifted to watching TV3 news and have never intentionally watched TV One news since then. I now feel I must move on to Prime and take in their news, I have lost all faith in Campbell, as a news reporter he has lost all integrity.
