Just a little about the time capsules Kiwi girl mentioned.

Two time capsules have been discovered underneath a statue damaged in the quake, as the nation prepares to mark one week since the tragedy struck.

The time capsules were discovered in Cathedral Square under the plinth of a statute of John Robert Godley, which was damaged in the quake. One was a small glass capsule while the other was a large metal-like object. 

The discovery, described by Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker as "remarkable",


The capsules will be opened in the future, but would be looked after at the city museum in the meantime.

Parker said he hoped to "discover and understand the words and visions of our forebears" in the capsules.

Irishman John Robert Godley is known as the "Founder of Canterbury" even though he lived there for only two-and-a-half years. He travelled in Ireland and North America and developed ideas about how colonies should be established and governed.

The statue will be rebuilt, Parker said.

Regarding the predictions of further quakes on specific days and of floods by a certain individual I would direct those concerned by such statements to this webpage:

Science does not supports 'predictions' made by this individual. Under the present circumstances such utterances are irresponsible and little more than fear-mongering. Yes, there may be more earthquakes (suggested by previous experience and knowledge of tectonic plate movement) and/or flooding, but a good dollop of common sense tells us that is likely anyway.

Even if this prognosticator's 'prediction' occurs I for one would put it down to nothing more than coincidence. One reason such people get a voice is that people remember the 'hits' and forget the 'misses'. It's nothing more than a scam, just like those who use 'cold reading' techniques and statistical probability theory to make people believe that they can 'talk to the dead'.

Please be very skeptical of such people. Did he accurately predict the quake of last week? If so, why didn't he warn everyone, saving many deaths and injuries. Put his detailed 'predictions' on the fridge and wait to see what happens.

Thanks spades for posting the 'silly beliefs ' link, I was reading through it this morning.
While I personally hold no credence to Mr Rings predictions, I think if people do then perhaps they will be prepared with a survival kit, fresh water etc which could be a help in the future as the aftershocks are surely set to continue for many months to come. The more people that have provisions the better, even if they never have to use them.
Just my two cents worth.

Yes Ken Ring did give those dates between 18-25th of Feb for more earth movement.  

As I was told by a geologist the fault line is running from West to East and we were meant to of had a aftershock of 6.1, well this shake was East and was a 6.3.  Hopefully the fault is moving more out to sea.

I am sticking it out in Christchurch.  I can see how Ken Ring would frighten people, but always best to be safe than sorry.

Gastro bug going around anyway.  Phoned the G.P nurse, she said no one has come down with water related gastro bugs as yet, so more likely I picked up a bug from another person.

I had no idea about the time capsule, how exciting, I wonder if any relations placed anything in it?

Leandra, I also inquired about Newbe, think she is without phone etc in Avonside, that is why she is not on here.
