That distant cousin is soo accurate, Mal.

They did always say you would need to look after yourself for 3-4 days but 9-10 days is not on.

The grass roots groups like Rangiora Express have saved these "Refugee" suburbs. Today they delivered "bucket" toilets ;D Kiwi ingenuity at its best.

Apparently our street in Heathcote got 1 Portaloo today yet 18 were at the Rangiora refuge for 12 people on Monday night:( Just to add, 6 different people said to CD these should go somewhere else with no result.

Civil Defence need to be seriously looked at, Orion has accomplished more in a week than they have.
I get the impression that CD told groups like Rangiora Express to pull out as they had food supplies etc under control...rubbish there were still pockets like Ferrymead, Heathcote and surrounds getting nothing at all.

Annie

To add: the volunteers have been amazing, I'm not at all critical of them, but I think good leaders were lacking. I'm a Project Manager and a few others I know here are also. We all offered to co-ordinate various groups but none of us were used. Believe me, I'm a better PM than a cook ;D

Mal, Your last account is heartbreaking.   I am so far away but do hope that the authorities and everyone involved hear your message.

We still, very occasionally, see images from Haiti, Pakistan and elsewhere where survivors of those earthquakes/floods/landslides are living in unimaginable conditions months/years after the media attention has moved elsewhere.

I pray that those suffering in the regions you mention don't become 'forgotten' people.

With much love from a cold but sunny UK, where most of the population can, fortunately, go about their daily business.

Just had another jolt in Wellington, about 5 minutes ago. Short and sweet!  I thought I felt a couple of tiny little swimmy ones earlier in the evening, if I'd been on the turps I would have thought I'd had one too many. ;D   The second one gave the house a bit of a creak.

3rd one I have felt tonight.  No doubt about this one at all.  A loud thump, as when our local army are doing explosives. Not a huge one, but one good sharp jolt, and creaks in house. Still sitting up at my computer,(obviously) but was seriously getting ready to take cover!

Just had a look on Geonet, not registered yet.  But back to the Christchurch people, once again my heart goes out to you for bearing this burden day after day since September.

Suzy, I truly hope you take up one of those offers of a break away from it!  - But maybe, just maybe mind you, Wellington might not be a good option right now  ;D

It's on Geonet now

 Reference Number: 3473252
NZDT: Fri, Mar 4 2011 2:19 am
Magnitude: 4.7
Depth: 30 km
Details: 10 km north-east of Upper Hutt

So, bigger than I thought, and only 10 Kms away -  just as well it was 30km down methinks!!

Maybe I imagined the other two, they're still not on the register, and this one was listed within a couple of minutes.

Well, I think I need a cuppa and a fag!!

Blimy Jeanne, thats a decent shake! They seem awful in the dead of night when everything is quiet. Stay safe up there and think about getting a survival kit... (pop some ciggies in it!):)

Hi there!

Mal, your accounts are amazing, mind boggling etc! If it were not for your posts on here we would have absolutely no idea just what you folks are having to cope with. You are giving us a real insight as to just what life is like, from the inside. After reading it all, I thought that you ought to send that to the Powers that be, so that they know what it is like for the ordinary person on the ground.

Are there any Wellingtonians who live in the Lower Hutt area ??? I have a friend who lives in Belmont and am wondering if she is ok. I would try ringing her, but with the 13 hour time difference and me not knowing her work hours, it makes it a bit difficult!

Do take care everyone

Best wishes to all
