Rowley tegis village 1851
« on: Friday 25 February 11 17:48 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I'm researching the Tromans family in Rowley Regis, they appear on the 1851 census, address, 'Village' house no. 88. Head of house Daniel, wife Mary both nailers, 2daughters and a son, The eldest daughter aged 8 is a nurse, also living there are 2 men both aged 22 described as inmates. occupation nailer and labourer.
Can anyone throw any light on this it appears to have been some kind of institution.
Thanks

Doesn't look like an institution.

One dictionary definition of Inmate is "Archaic . a person who dwells with others in the same house"

That's the only thing that makes sense to me.

also -the house is not number 88 - address is just village - at that time the village probably wouldn't be numbered

88 is the house schedule number -and refers to the census -not the address

1851
Village Rowley regis Staffs
Daniel tromans head M 38 nailer
Ann wife 38 nailer
Jane daughter 8 Nurse
Ezekiel son 5 scholar
Mary daughter 11 mths
Joseph Fletcher inmate U 22 nailer
benjamin Salsbury inmate 22 lab

all except benjamin b. Rowley Staffs
HO107 2028 173 28

I agree with Mike - it looks like the "inmates" were lodgers- but probably called "inmates" as they may have been living in the workshop

Life was tough at that time for Nailers -masters grew rich while nailers laboured for hours in hot cramped connditions. Whole families sometimes two or three households lived and worked in small workshops, often no more than 10 square yards Poverty and hunger were never far from the door

The Illustrated London News reported how a family of nailers did not know the tase of meat They had a cup of tea and bread for breakfast and dinner and little else

I expect daughter Jane was a "nurse" looking after the baby while Mum & Dad worked
