MODIFIED:  Ignore this one....it's nowhere near Castle Sowerby, sorry!

I tried Google maps and found this

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?rlz=1T4SUNC_enGB374GB375&q=cow+rigg+longtown&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=Cow+Rigg,+Easton,+Longtown,+Carlisle,+Cumbria+CA6+5RR&gl=uk&ei=XL5nTdiRGoK0hAeFnr2fDw&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CBYQ8gEwAA

Gosh, what a long link! But it shows Cow Rigg as being mear Easton in the far north of Cumbria.

If it helps, in the 1871 census Cowrigg comes up in the Parish of Castle Sowerby and the Township of Bustabeck.
Neighbouring farms are Sour Nook, Stockwell,  Doby Hill, Style, Birks & Birks Hill.

Take a look at http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=337500&Y=541500&A=Y&Z=120

There's a 'Low Currig' there, which could have originally been Cow Rigg

Jen, I'd agree with that. You can almost hear how the changes would have happened, if you imagine the word cow being pronounced more like coo.

Neighbouring farms are Sour Nook, Stockwell,  Doby Hill, Style, Birks & Birks Hill.

Sour Nook also shows up on that map, and if you pan north Birks Hill comes into view  :D
