In 1871 there was only one family there, and if you look at the map you'll see it seems to be a house by itself.

when googling Cow Rigg, a page came up for Marriages in the Longtown area ,

I think that's the Cow Rigg jen mentions in her reply #2, but Kath is specifically asking about Cow Rigg in Castle Sowerby parish.

Brilliant thank you once again to fellow Rootschatters, it looks like it was a farm.
Another mystery solved thanks to you all.

Hello Kathb

Cowrigg - Castle Sowerby used to be a ale house and a farm together.  I would think  it would have been in the parish of Raughton Head.  It is surrounded by Raughton Head, Sebergham, High Bridge, Stockdalewath.  I believe that the building is still there today (the location is a little hard to find!)

Thanks Oletta, this sounds promising.  The ancestor who lived there was an Inn Keeper prior to living there in 1865 and after in the North East, so it fits very well.
Can you tell me please how you know or found out that this address was an Alehouse and Farm?
Thank you
Regards
Kathb
