WILKINS/BUNTER or HUNTER ? Family,Salisbury area,Wilts.
« on: Thursday 24 February 11 22:47 GMT (UK) »
Researching my Wilkins ancestors from the Salisbury area, Wiltshire.

Thomas Wilkins born abt 1740 married my 5 x ggrandmother Christian Haskell (Hascoll) at Donhead St Andrew in 1767. Thomas died in 1775 having fathered 4 children, Stephen, Ann, Susannah and Mary.

Would like to find out when and where Thomas was born and link up with living descendents.

Also looking for Susannah Bunter or Hunter, mother of Christian Haskell. Any Hunter or Bunter family members out there ?

Have you found any links to a James David Wilkins b 1857  in Wiltshire (m gg grandfather)?  His father was David James Wilkins b 1835 in Portsmouth.

Thanks Mc I'll take a look at that one, it's a possibility. There are lots of Thomas Wilkins around unfortunately, it seems to be a very common name.

Rwenman I haven't looked for any Wilkins ancestors outside of Wiltshire yet. Thomas's descendant's gravitated south through Shaftesbury and Wimborne in Dorset. I wouldn't discount a Hampshire connection though and I would be interested to hear about your Portsmouth Wilkins.

I am pretty sure now that Thomas's mother in law was Susannah Bunter, not Hunter.

It's definitely Bunter and NOT Hunter, I've found Susannah's birth in Donhead but it doesn't name her parents ( much teeth gnashing)  I think I can work out who the parents were but not 100% on this at the moment.

Rob, I'll let you know if I come across any of your Wilkins, but nothing to offer at the mo.

Thomas Wilkins is still a complete mystery to me. I have found two possibles for him in Tisbury but nothing more positive.

Have you looked in Wiltshire wills?

http://history.wiltshire.gov.uk/heritage/wills_search.php

Almost all of the Bunter wills (total of 12 including a couple of duplicate people) are in Donhead St Mary / St Andrew. If you were lucky, you might find one in which Susannah is mentioned.

If I'm following, Susannah Bunter was the mother of the person who married in 1740 (you say you've found Susannah's birth but you don't give a date). So wills in the early-mid-1700s-ish might be a place to start, to look for her father.

There's a Christopher in 1763, a tailor; a Thomas in 1736, an inholder, and a James in 1740, a yeoman.

Also, although it likely would not help much, there is a will for Christian Wilkins, widow, in 1796 in Ogbourne St Andrew.

Hello Janey,

Thanks for that advice, sometimes when you've been hunting ancestors for years you can easily forget to do some of the simplest of checks...i.e. check wills :)

Susannah was baptized in 1716 and married Francis Haskol in 1737 at Donhead St Andrew. Their daughter Christian was my 6 x ggrandmother. Christian married Thomas Wilkins in 1767 at DSA. You mention Ogbourne St Andrew being the address of Christian Wilkins, widow. She was widowed in 1775 and I wondered if you meant Ogbourne or Donhead ?  I'll take a look myself and thank you.

Heh, I'd never heard of either place (my Wiltshire roots are before 1800 so I'm not expert at the geography!) so believe me, I copied them both and checked with google to make sure that was a real place. ;)

I have yet to check my own wills at that site ... pricey little things they are, when you want half a dozen!
