Orphans 1864 in Govan, Lanarkshire, Scotland
« on: Thursday 24 February 11 21:41 GMT (UK) »
Looking for 3 orphaned children, parents were from Uist and moved all the children to Glasgow, parents were living Govan at the time of their deaths.

I would like to find:

Margaret Buchanan b. 1846 -1861 census has her working as a "domestic"
Alexander Buchanan b. b. 1849 -1861 census has him working as a "rivet boy"
Catherine (Chirsty) Buchanan 1851 - 1861 census has her as a "scholar"

I can not find them pasts this census. I have checked all deaths in the area and can not find any marriages.

The parents were Angus Buchanan & Catherine MacLellan

Thank you,
M

hi ,I`V BEEN looking for the govan orphanages in 1900 and got info to look at the poor law records at glasgow  mitchell library, and they had records for my family asking for poor relief, not on line so send an e.mail and they will tell you if they have your records, then it`s £10 for a seach or you can go to glasgow if you are near.

Hi Barbara,

I have e-mailed and they couldn't find anything, I have since, made contact with a cousin living in Scotland that has checked the records with her memberships and the children still have not been found.

I meant to delete this post and then had a reply and was waiting to make sure they read it before deleting...and forgot.

Thank you for the reply though
MaryAnne

When did the parents die?

When did the family move to Govan?

1871 census has this record

Alexander Buchanan 24 Occupation: Ironmonger's Shopman
Jane Buchanan 26
Andrew Thomson 19
William Lon Caruthers 24

Address: 70 Govan Street

Hi,

The family moved sometime after 1856 and were there before the 1861 census.
Parents were Angus Buchanan & Catherine MacLellan.

I'm surprised you found this Alexander, does it say where he is from? I'm going to have to go back in and take a look.

Thank you for another link to search.

It gives his place of birth as Glasgow but if he came as a young child he may not have known his birthplace. I thought the occupation could have been linked to his previous job as a rivet boy

You could try searching for a marriage between 1861-1871 to a Jane

Did Angus die 1860 and Catharine in 1864?
