Hi I am reserching George William orriss b 1902 at some time during his childhood he was placed in a home i do not know how long he was there but left when he was about 14 he was born and lived in Bromley /Poplar i only know it was a train journey back to Poplar, he did have a mother but she may have been a widow. i am sure she was very poor. just wonder if anyone would know where children were sent to from that area.grateful for any information.

Hi

He may have gone into the poor law system in which case he would be possible to track through the records for that poor law union. Records will be held at the London Metropolitan Archives. Or he could have been placed in any number of charity orphanages either national like Barnardoes, Spurgeons, Fegans, Waifs and Strays or charity homes that only operated in London. It is a long list of possibles if you don't know which one unfortunately.

This is a list of all the charities in the London area in 1917 including children's homes

http://www.victorianlondon.org/charities/charities.htm

The best shot at trying to find which one it may have been is to search for him on the 1911 census

http://www.1911census.co.uk/

You cannot ask for lookups from the 1911 census at present on Rootschat you must search yourself. A free search however seems to show him living in Poplar in a household.

   Hi Valda
thank you for your reply i know its a long shot with so little detail, I did a search on the 1911 census last year but could not find him , Yet you seem to have found him living in a Poplar household so that is interesting. I will also try the website you have suggested.

           Regards
                          Marie.

Hi Jenifer
Thank you, i took an S off the index and found him on the 1911 census. I am so pleased with the other information you gave me, i know so little about the family. George never knew his father he was told he had died before he was born and his mother is listed as being a widow on the census but the only G W Orriss death record i could find was 1910. so maybe he just deserted them, bit of a puzzle.

       kind regards
                             Marie
