I think I've found the name of Lydia but can't find a marriage for the moment.

On the 1881 census Lydia says he was born in Chideock, Dorset so I looked on the 1871 for a Lydia age approx 11 born Chideock and there was only one.

On the 1871 census living at the Torcross Hotel, Stokenham, Devon.

Edward Perrey Head 41 Coast Guard Common Boat born Plymouth.
Elizabeth Perrey wife 37 born Plymouth.
Mary Jane Perrey dau. 14 Dressmakers apprentice born Plymouth.
Martha Matilda Perrey dau13 Scholar born Chideock, Dorset.
Lydia Hilbrook Perrey dau 12 Scholar born Chideock, Dorset.
Henrietta Perrey dau 9 Scholar born Chideock, Dorset.
Frances Alice  Perrey dau 5 Scholar born Stokenham, Devon
Jessie dau  2 born Stokenham, Devon.

I wonder if she married William but the name was spelt wrong?

yes that's my Lydia

Her name is Lydia Hallbrook Perry born June 1859

And to make it more fun Lydia's mum was called Elizabeth Jane - and her census name alternates between Elizabeth & Jane!! lol

That could be him then...... I have just looked and the Bn was Infantry ....

I know it's not getting us very far but at least I'm confirming what you know.

I wonder if they married at the barracks? I think it might just be worth having a look to see if you can find where the records are kept (that's if they've survived)

I feel as though I am making progress!!

I have just discovered that the Bn returned to England from India in 1870 so it is quite posible this is the Bn.

It's funny how you can stare at things for ages and don't get anywhere.

I have written to Kew to see if there are any muster rolls there - am waiting for the estimate or to be told no can do....

Would records from the barracks not show on the BMD?

Not necessarily or maybe it was never registered on the records.

I paid someone to search the army records and it was worth it only because they knew where to look.

I have had a quote but it seems such a lot of money, and there's no guarantee I'll get the answer ...

I'll route out the email address of the couple I use. They've done a few searches for me and they were all under £25.

I'll PM you with their email address.
