Teignmouth parish records. MANLEY William
« on: Thursday 24 February 11 20:21 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I wonder if someone could help me.

I am looking for a birth record of William Manley born approx 1844 in Teignmouth - according to the 1851 & 1861 census (For these censuses he was living with his aunt Mary Pascoe nee Manley in Bovey Tracey).
In later censuses his age varies so he could have been born up until 1847; I have been unable to find a record on the BMD.

Thank you in anticipation

Teignmouth registration district is Newton Abbott and there is a birth for a William Manley 1st quarter 1843 registered in Newton Abbott.

What I suggest is you email the register office with all the info you have ie parents names and Teignmouth and see if it's the correct one.

I've had a look on familysearch and there's a birth of a William Manley son of Elias and Elizabeth Manley 1843 Bovey Tracey.

If you look at the 1851 census it looks like John Pascoe and Mary were on their second marriages or Ellen was the illegitimate child of Mary The older children being called Pascoe and Ellen called Manley.

I looked for a marriage for them and found John Pascow to Mary Manley 25th May 1834 Bovey Tracey.

Hi Margaret
Thank you for this, but unfortunately I have this William's birth certificate, and it isn't my William. This William lives with Elias Manley 1807 and Elizabeth (nee Wills).
I believe that Ellen was the illegitimate daughter of Mary Pascoe (nee Manley) - I can not find any birth records for Ellen either (in the 1841 census she was living with Elias and Elizabeth (nee Lambshead) Manley but was called Eleanor in that).
I am unsure who my William's parents were - it could be any one of Elias & Elizabeth Manley's children
Mary - William would be declared as a son and not nephew in the 1851 census
Susannah - died in 1834, Elizabeth was married in 1833. Eliza married in 1838, Hannah married in 1845.
William - married in 1835 - had a child called William in 1835. Elias - married in 1831-child William born in 1843. Isaac - married and child William born in 1832. James never married.
I tend to think that Hannah could be William's mother, or James could be William's father - but then I would have thought there would be a bastardy order ....
I am totally thrown by this and would appreciate any help
Thank you

Hi Helen

Let's take it one step at a time. The birth cert you have confirms what I thought that he's the son of Elias and Elizabeth. Have you found a link between Mary and Elizabeth ie sister's? He could have been taken in by John and Mary for a number of reasons maybe Ellizabeth was ill and couldn't look after a baby or maybe she died.

I couldn't find any records for Ellen like you so maybe she was called Eleanor.

Leave it with me and I'll see what I can find.

Margaret  :)

Hi Margaret

Thank you for this - it's good to bounce ideas around!!
The parents of William 1843 were Elias (Mary Pascoe's brother) & Elizabeth. William lived with Elias and Elizabeth in 1851 and eventually married a Jane, and I have followed them by census to 1901 where they lived in Fareham, Hants.
My William lives with Mary Pascoe in both 1851 & 1861 censuses. I think he moved to Plymouth and lived as a lodger in 1871, and then 1881 onwards he lived with Lydia and his own family
Thank you again

Helen I've spent all day making a spreadsheet of all the William Manley's born in Devon 1841 to 1848 from all the censuses and I'm nowhere near getting an answer for you.

On some censuses they appear and then disappear on the next. Then the birthplaces changes, then occupations change or even year of birth. All perfectly normal for a genealogist I suppose because we've got lots of examples like that in our tree's.

I just don't know what to suggest next. I even thought that there was a possibility that on the 1851 both Mary and Elizabeth had listed William as living in their homes, if for example he'd only been staying with Mary for a few days.

I've looked at family names, marriages, occupations and  even places close to where they say they were born and come up with zilch.

Who is the soldier age 26 who says he was born in Exeter? Where does he disappear to or does he leave Devon and end up living somewhere else?

Aaargh!!

I'll have to see if I can come up with some other way to find his parents.  Margaret  :D

HI Margaret

Thank you so much for your help!

I have only been doing my family history for about 18months - and I hit this block straight away - I thought it was me so am quite relieved that someone else is coming up against the samebrick walls!

What has made you ask about a William being in the Army - I found a William in the Royal Marines - or is that the Army?

My William served at some point (but I don't know when) with the 2nd Bn Royal Dublin Fusiliers the 103rd Foot formerly the Bombay Regiment of the Old East India Company. I found this information out from his children's marriage certificates and his son's citation for an MBE.

I know that my William is the William who lived at 4 Henry Street in Plymouth - so I know where he was 1881 - 1901, and he then died in 1903. I have worked through the William Manleys born around 1844 and have eliminated each by finding out where they were in 1881. This is how I have come up with my William living with Mary Pascoe in 1851 & 61. I had also thought that maybe two people had declared William as living with them for a census. It's very strange because this family has the same issue with an Elias Manley - one born in 1835 & another in 1836 - one of them is in all censuses and the other is only in two!! grrrr

I have been unable to find any marriage record for William and Lydia, yet I have a photo of Lydia wearing a wedding ring

If children were illegitimate would they have been registered in parish records anywhere or did this only happen if the children were born of a couple?

Oh it is just so frustrating!!

Thankyou again foryour help and advice

The soldier I found was your Royal Marine. It's an infantry battalion that utilises naval techniques so a sort of cross between the two.

My grandfather was in the Dublin Fusiliers and I've got all his Army records which make for interesting reading (when you can decipher it) LOL

The children may have been baptised so it's worth looking for the parish records. If you can't find a marriage record for William and Lydia then I would try looking for the non-conformist records just to see if they were Methodists or Baptists or even Quakers.

I'll see if I can find a marriage for them.
