Thatcham Paynes/Northcroft
« on: Thursday 24 February 11 11:46 GMT (UK) »
I am still trying to find more of my gggf Job(aka John) Payne and his family. He was born in Thatcham  around 1804(though in one census is it transcribed as Botch Thatcham is that a place or a mistake?).

He went to India with the Honourable East India Company's army in 1825 and came back around 1846 to Newbury and then retired to Dawlish, Devon.

His parents were William Pain and Sarah Northcroft who married Feb 1791 at Thatcham. Siblings were Harriet, George, Mariah & William. I think Harriet married a bricklayer called Thomas Bennett of Newbury., but other than that the family is a blank page in my family history records. If anyone can help with Payne/Pain/Payn or Northcroft ancestors I'd be grateful.

Hi
re, Job Payne in India

It would be a good idea to check the British Library, Asia & Pacific Collections. As he was in the H.E.I.C you may well find some info on him.

Best wishes, Gem x

Thank you both for taking the trouble, now I have some dates to add to the names and a great place to look for Job and maybe see what he did whilst in the HEIC.

William Pain s/o Simon & Deborah 22 Feb 1761 @ St Nicolas, Newbury.

Might be Job/John's father?
