Where are/where these places in Exeter?
« on: Thursday 24 February 11 11:33 GMT (UK) »
I have been trying to locate two places where my great grandmother Frances Payne (nee Holmes) lived before she married. They are both in Exeter, the first is Trinity Street and the second is Salutary Place, St Sidwells.

I suspect these places are no longer in existence maybe as a result of the Blitz or development. When I worked in Exeter a few years ago in Southernhay there was a building that used to be a church/chapel at the Southgate Hotel end of Southernhay/South St. I believe it had been Trinity church at one time, so maybe Trinity St was around there near the city wall.

I can't find either in books that I have on Exeter history, so if anyone out there know where they are or where it would help me greatly in compiling my family history. I live in Torbay so a day trip to Exeter in the springtime wouldn't be a problem. Thanks

1891 census  -  Exeter District 11  -  District Description

The punctuation (or lack of) is the Enumerator's

Part of the civil parish of Sidwill* from the corner of Silver Road, including the two houses behind Salem Place then on to Cobury Place and Grosvenor Place both sides from thence back to Salutary Cottages the east side of Belmont Road, Cleveland Villas Belmont Cottages and Belmont Place then round the corner to the Globe Inn, continuing the north side of Clifton Road to and including Clifton House Inn at the end also Albert Street, both sides, continuing along the north side of Clifton Road including both side of Chute Street  to the Clifton House Inn, then up the right side of Summerland Street to & through Codrington Street both sides

*  the district is listed as St Sidwell

The actual images show 1-29 (odd numbers) Salutary Place, then Springfield Villa, 1 Grosvenor Place, Grosvenor Chapel, 2 Grosvenor Place....

Many of the roads and the Globe Inn still show up on google maps

There is a directory for an insurance office:
1 Cathedral Sq, Trinity St, Exeter

Not sure if this is your Trinity street ...

Thank you this is getting the detective juices flowing!

I found Frances Holmes on 1851 census at 7 Salutary Place, and have a letter dated 1875 from her family at 9 Trinity St so will do some more digging and have a wander in Exeter soon.

Trinity Street was in Southernhay, opposite Dean Clarke House (Old RD&E Hospital) hard up against and parallel with the City Wall. Now it is the path that follows the wall for maybe 150 yards, from South Street behind the Southgate Hotel. There is little on either street on Exeter Memories, and I should know as I run it. Thomas Shapter in the 1848 History of the Cholera in Exeter has an illustration showing the burial of the dead in Trinity Yard which was at the end of Trinity Street in what is now the hotel car park. Deb USA is correct about the placement of Salutary Place – there was a brickyard in the area until about 1849. See this page http://www.exetermemories.co.uk/EM/_commercial/brickworks.php and read the section on the Blackboy Road brickworks.
