Robert Ellis - From Chipping Campden and Lived in West Bromwich
« on: Wednesday 23 February 11 17:44 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I am trying to find out more about the early life of Robert Ellis, his father Samuel Ellis and the Ellis family before that.

Robert Ellis was born in Chipping Campden, Gloucestshire around 1829 (all census records from 1861 onwards and his marriage certificate suggest he was born this year).

He moved to West Bromwich sometime around 1851 to 1858. He married Mary Palmer Banister in 1858 and from the marriage certificate I know his father was a Samuel Ellis. Before 1851 I have found these records:

1841 Census - Chipping Campden
Samuel Ellis Head 40 (b1801) Ag Labourer
Ann Ellis Wife 40 (b1801)
Robert Ellis Son 12 (b1829)

1851 Census - Chipping Campden
Samuel Ellis Head 42 (b1809) Farm Labourer
Prudence Ellis Wife 35 (b1816)
Robert Ellis Son 22 (b 1829) Farm Labourer

Christening Record
11 Mar 1829
Father Samuel, Mother Mary

In all cases the DOB for Robert seems to match and there is a father Samuel but I cannot tell who his mother was and I'd like to trace the Ellis family further back in the Chipping Campden area.

Any help would really be appreciated. I have lot of info from 1861 onwards if I can help anyone else.

Thanks

This info from IGI index but extracted( be wary)

Baptism Saml. Ellis 1 Aug.1802 chipping Campden Father John (no mothers name) + other children

Have you found a marriage to Prudence, this would give Sams fathers name.

Thanks for this. The Samuel Ellis Baptism is intersting, and as you say gives the fathers name as John.

However, I can't tell which is the correct Samuel with a son Robert. There is Samuel born 1809 (1851 Census) and one born 1801 (1841 Census). Unless they are one and the same and there is a typo or error. Different wives though, could have remarried I suppose.

Confused!
