Richard HARVEY 1832 St Just-in-Penwith to Australia
« on: Wednesday 23 February 11 06:26 GMT (UK) »
Seeking information on my 2nd Great Grandfather Richard Harvey born in 1832 in St Just-in-Penwith his family residing in Bojewyan. Richard was a tin miner and came to Australia sometime in the early 1850s. His father was Edward and his mother Mary Rowe.

Richard married Margaret Canning in 1854 in Victoria, Australia. Margaret was born in Dundonald, Ayrshire in 1835.
I have searched many sources in trying to find when Richard sailed for, and arrived in Australia. I believe his port of entry to Australia was Adelaide South Australia.

Can anyone offer any assistance in finding Richard or offer suggestions as to where I could further research? Where did he live in Cornwall? Did Richard travel to Australia alone? And on what ship did he travel?
Any help will be greatly received.

I will look more closely later when I have more time, but an initial glance only shows one Richard with father Edward in Cornwall on the 1841 census, living in Paul. The wife in this family is Elizabeth.

What was the occupation of your Edward?
(the 1841 census Edward is a fisherman)

Hi Ruskie,

Thank you so much for your help. I do not really know Edward's occupation but a think he too was a miner.

(great resource Ladyhawk  :))

If you have Richard's Australian marriage certificate does it say if his father Edward is deceased?

You say Richard married in Victoria in 1854. What leads you to believe that Richard came to Australia in the early 1850's? How did you narrow down this timeframe?

Richard’s Marriage Record states Edward his father is a miner - so I am assuming he is still alive in 1854. It does not say deceased.

Evidence suggests Richard arrived in the early 1850s through records obtained of his hospital admissions.  I have his death record and he died 27 August 1879 at 47 years of age of stomach cancer. I know there are some inconsistencies there with religion and addresses but on checking street names Richard did live in the two streets mentioned. I don’t know about the religions!

That's very useful, thanks whiteKat. So 1852/53 for a year of arrival. That's good news.

He should be somewhere in England on the 1851 census in that case.

I don't suppose you have him on the 1841 or 1851 censuses do you?

Another question I'm afraid:

What leads you to believe he arrived in South Australia?

Have you dismissed this arrival in Victoria:

HARVEY RICHARD
age 23
month NOV
year 1854
ship CLARA
book 10
page 395
(age and year of arrival fit quite well)

Ah, these also appear on the same ship:
HARVEY JOHN 21 NOV 1854 CLARA 10 395
HARVEY MARY A 23 NOV 1854 CLARA 10 395
HARVEY PRISCILLA 22 NOV 1854 CLARA 10 395
Do they ring any bells? Age similarity is curious ...
