Hello
I've got back to a marriage in 1818 of my Nisbet tree and there are various people from then up to the early 1900's I can't seem to find death certs and in some cases births (incl OPRs) or census returns. I've been at the archive place in Edinburgh a few times and was looking for general advice rather than specifics (as there is a fair amount) as to any other avenues I may look down or something I'm missing

Have you allowed for possible variants?  Nisbet(t) and Nesbit(t)

Can you tell us where they lived and perhaps what you have found.  Spellings can be very inconsistent and add to that the possibilities of illegible writing and it can be very easy to get mangled results.  Personally I find the IGI a little more forgiving in terms of spellings and it will produce more results from which you can always use their spelling to find the originals on ScotlandsPeople.

Are they likely to have left wills?  Perhaps a quick search of the index for these on ScotlandsPeople might throw up some possibilities, or at least give you an idea of some variant spellings.

Pre-1855 not all burials are recorded and that can be very frustrating.  It all depends on the area.  The ScotlandsPeople site has links to lists of the dates for OPR and will indicate if there are burials recorded for the time period in question.

Thanks Nell
Firstly what is IGI?
One specific person is fairly recent
George Nisbet
b. 2?/08/1901
Thornhill Rd Falkirk
f. George nisbet
m. Jean Nisbet (Jamieson)
We believe he died very young possibly before 1903. The family movements (gleaned from other births) are Torphichen 1903 - 1909+ Muiravonside 1909? - 1924
cheers
Steven

The IGI is the International Genealogical Index found on this site:

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp

However, it is not likely to be much use to you because it generally peters out as far as dates are concerned in about 1875 or so for Scotland.  Since you mentioned 1818, I unwisely thought that you were looking at this earlier time frame.

Have you eliminated all possibilities from ScotlandsPeople?  You may have to wait for the 1911 census to be released later this year to check for the number of children the couple had and how many had died.

Thanks again

I have lots of variable information on my tree, I would like to go further back than 1818 but seem to have hit a brick wall and am therefore trying to fill in the blanks on the newer generations in the hope that I will get more vital information on the older generations.
I've got pretty much all info on my G.Gran generation with the exception of this death.
I've got births back to 1820 with the exception of two around 1850 -1855 and when it comes to deaths my ggg generation, gggg generation and ggggg generation it is practically non - existant.
My 1818 marriage is between John Nisbet and Helen (Ellen) Aitchison in Coldingham parish

Hi snimmo243,

A good site for pre-1855 events is "FreeReg",  http://freereg.rootsweb.com/

It is particularly good for East Lothian but some other counties are not covered. Try it, you get some good info.

Scotland - Buchanan, Thomson, Pat(t)erson, Stewart, Ritchie, Tracey
Ireland - Tracey, Conroy, Pat(t)erson.
