Hi, it's a little bit difficult without more information.  We have no idea whether to look for a son of a family or a Head, a married man or single.  I think you need to work from a little bit earlier, if you can identify the date of birth of one of the daughters you will find out from the birth certificate what the mother's name was, also her maiden name, then it will be easier to search for the marriage having two names, also maybe an approximate date, say just a year or two earlier than the eldest child's birth.

Have you asked any of the older members of the family for any documents they may have tucked away, or any memories that will take you back to a location earlier than 1940 as we really need to look for him/them as a man of about 22 years old in the 1901 census.

There are quite a few Thomas Dawson's born around 1878/9 in Lancs- none living specifically in Manchester. As Mary suggested you will need to give us more info.
Presumably when you say he was married to E? that would have been after 1901?

One of us will take another look once we know a bit more. What job did he do by the way- or do you know his parents or any brothers or sisters names?
