Hi Looking for the grave of Robert Balmer.He died 12 Aug 1853 in Jedburgh.Thank you

There is no record of a gravestone for a Robert Balmer at Jedburgh Abbey Graveyard.   There is or was a very badly worn stone thought to to be for a William Balmer but even that was not definitive and nothing else on the stone could be read.

There is the present day cemetery at Castlewood.   Not certain when this cemetery was established.  I know there are stones dating from the later part of the 1800s but whither as early as the 1850s I cannot tell you with any certainty.  Unfortunately the stones at Castlewood have not yet been recorded.

Unfortunately, Castlewood Cemetery was not opened until 1857, so your Robert could not have been buried there.

Hello Sunlaws.

I was up at Castlewood cemetery today looking for a William Cranston, who according to his death cert was buried there on 20-June 1857. I couldnt find the grave but only looked in about 1/3 of the ground albeit it was the older section. ...also there are quite a number of stones lying face down  and knowing my luck it will be one of those I am looking for !

 I have just been back on line to try and find out when it opened and I saw your post of 2005 saying it was 1857!  Do you know when in 1857?

No, I'm sorry, I don't know exactly when Castlewood cemetery opened, but if William Cranston's death certificate states that he was buried there on June 20th, it's probably telling the truth.

I don't know the financial circumstances of your ancestor, but it's worth remembering that not everyone had a headstone. If a man left a widow and family of young children, paying the rent and feeding the children took precedence over buying a headstone..
