Attwood in Overtown, Wishaw 1891/1901 look up please
« on: Tuesday 19 April 05 11:24 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find details of Noah Attwood born c.1865 in Shropshire. I believe he moved to Overtown sometime between 1881-1891 and worked in the iron/steel industry. I would like to find details of any family he had.

As I have not done any Scottish research before I am not sure what Census information is available. Please let me know if it's all pay per view etc. as I don't want to put anybody to any expense! If there are Census CDs available, as for England, then I would really appreciate a look up if you have them for the area.

Thank you for reading this.

Hi Helen,  He's still in England according to 1881 English census.

You can search and download images of the 1891/1901 census from www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
It's a debit/credit pay site, costs £6 for 30 credits.  1 credit to see searches, 5 credits to download image.

hi,   There is an N. Attwood still living in Overtown. Overtown is a village in the outskirts of Wishaw Lanarkshire where the Ravenscraig Steelworks etc. were the main employment in the area until the late '80's. there are only 6 Attwoods listed in the Clyde Valley phonebook some or all may be related.

There only seems to be one family of Attwood's in Cambusnethan cemetery prior to 1916.
They are in plot E551. Arthur Attwood, who was married to Mary Alford. (He may have had a sister called Susan who married Robert Barr). Arthur and Mary had a daughter called Ethel Gertrude who died aged 19 months in April 1898. Arthur died aged 50 years in May 1910. His parents are given as Edward Henry Attwood and Louisa Williams.  Judging by the names, I would say there are English origins there.
I knew a Peter Attwood who lived in Nethan Avenue in the Netherton area of Wishaw, he was a postman I think but I suspect he has passed away by now. Lots of Overtown folk moved down to Netherton when the old mining houses were demolished at Castlehill.
