Milward,William of Llanilid born 1730
« on: Monday 21 February 11 07:27 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to make sense of material left with me by a decesed relative.
If I may repeat some of what she wrote and then ask if anyone can help me trace this direct line ancestor's life and times.
I apologise in advance for any mistakes in spelling or any factual or historical errors, as I have no idea whether the following is based on reality or imagination.

" William Milward of Llanilid was born 1730 and died at age 38 in 1768.He is linealy descended from Thomas,ap William Milward by Margaret, daughter of Christopher Turverville of Penlline,Sherrif of Glamorgan in 1550 and 1569.
He married Mary Jones of Pant-y-Corred , in Pantyrrch, descended from John ap Thomas of Pant-y-Corred,ap Evan ap David ap Llewelyn clan from Mattoc ap Festyn ap Gwrgant,Lord of Glamorgan, one of the 5 Royal tribes of Wales, whose daughter Alice married Robert Mathews of Castell-y-Mymache in Pentyrch." it goes on some more but I have not been able to read her writing well enough".

Names that seem to be associated with this direct line  are " Cecil Jenkins" " David Jenkins"," Mary Pritchard","William Talbot", " William Jones"

I don't begin to understand this complex document she left me and I am hoping a member can "translate" this into a more simple form and help me understand that generation of Milward. I understand "ap" however .
Any assistance is greatly appreciated !
Thank you !

Hello Phipps  :)

Not sure whether you know that Llanilid is in Glamorganshire:
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/GLA/Llanilid/

Would you like this moved to Glamorgan board or are you looking for a Breconshire connection?

Modified: I've found the Baptism of William Milward at Llanilid on 11th September 1729, the son of Harry and Elizabeth Milward.

Kind Regards
Morgan

Hi Morgan, I am very grateful to you for finding the baptism of William Milward
That is exciting news and Harry is a new name for me in the Milward family tree.
Yes please move the posting as you have suggested. Thank you.

Respectfully,
Philip

Hello Philip,

There is a Will of Henry Milward of Ystradowen on the National Library of Wales site.

Henry Milward : Will, 1735  Includes inventory

http://hdl.handle.net/10107/1018899

He mentions a son Henry Milward, and Ystradowen (Cowbridge) is very close to Llanilid Parish so it's worth investigating.  :)

I'll request that this is moved to Glamorganshire.

Kind Regards
Morgan

Hello again  :)

Re the document of William Milward'ancestry, it sounds as if someone has traced the Milward line back to Christopher Turberville, and traced a Wife's ancestry back to the Welsh Princes. There are some sites online which have documented this kind of pedigree, but ideally you need access to the Lewys Dwnn Book of Pedigrees available at National Library of Wales. Some of the major characters are documented in the NLW Dictionary of Welsh Biography, e.g. Iestyn ap Gwrgant

http://yba.llgc.org.uk/en/s-IEST-APG-1045.html

I think Mattock is probably Madoc ab Iestyn, son of Iestyn as Gwrgant. Madoc had a son Hywel who had a son Cynwrig, who had a son Llewelyn. Llywelyn ap Cynwrig died abt 1277 so it's a very long time ago!

The Mathew family of Castell y Mynach in Pentyrch are also documented in the NLW Dictionary of Welsh Biography

http://yba.llgc.org.uk/en/s-MATH-LLA-1350.html
Robert Mathew married Alice, daughter of John Thomas ap Thomas (of Pant-Y-Corred) ap Llewelyn Ychan ap Llewelyn ap Cynwrig ap Hywel ap Madoc ap Iestyn.

You mention lots of names and obviously have more on the document, so you need to take time to decipher it! Charles Talbot married Cecil Mathew, daughter of Charles Mathew of Castell y Mynach. They had a son William Talbot (1710-1782). Cecil was also the Great Granddaughter and heiress of Judge David Jenkins of Hensol when the male line died out.

However, I would suggest that when you have the opportunity you double check the facts for yourself. ;D

Kind Regards
Morgan
