New query about an Alness Ross
« on: Sunday 20 February 11 16:20 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Very new to this, so please correct if out of order.

We're trying to trace back my ancestor, Elizabeth Ross. This is a long shot given the popularity of the name. We have her marriage certificate for August 1st 1871 to James Hudson Ashton, when she was 23 and he was 29 and a captain in the merchant service. They were married at Trinity Church, Paddington. His father was William Ahston (deceased), hers was John Ross, farmer. Witnesses were Maria Octavia Ashton, and D.G. Ross. Ashton's address was in Kingston upon Hull; hers was given as 10 Celbridge Place, which from census records appears to have been a lodging house of some kind. WE assume that she left Scotland at some stage. There is another relative named, an aunt Rebecca Dogherty, with connections to South Shilds and to Paddington, but we have no way of knowing whether she is an aunt on the Ross side or the Ashton branch.
We have reliable information about the Ashtons but would like to track Elizabeth further back. The mose intriguing information is that she describes herself as 'Alness resident' in the 'where born' section of the  1911 census. We have trawled the data but can't find a John Ross with a daughter Elizabeth in the Alness area at the relevant time. Nor can we identify a gravestone that might tally.

Any suggestions how we proceed most gratefully received,

Bruce

My advice is to pursue D. G. Ross. At least you have a middle name there which might make it easier to trace him/her. Look to see if a D. G. Ross was born in Scotland at an appropriate time. He may have been a brother or an uncle or a cousin. Maybe by tracing him back you will get a connection. You could also look in the 1851 census for Alness to see if you can find her there with a father called John who is a farmer.

Graham.

Thanks. Was keeping D.g Ross to the end as it seems an even longer shot. The Alness census wasn't helpful - John Ross farmers abound (well 4 of them), but none with a daughter named Elizabeth we could see. d.G. Ross here we come!

Thanks for your suggestion. Very kind,

Bruce

And this John's wife is Davidina Graham .... D.G. Ross! Although perhaps more likely that their son David is the D.G. Ross from the certificate you mention

thank you for these leads. We found the following in the 1841 census who may be the parents and grandparents of Elizabeth, but we'll now work on tracking the relationships further. Am very impressed how yu managed to track the names down - did you use ScotlandsPeople or is there a more efficient search engine that would be more precise?

Many thanks 10
