Hi,
Very new to this, so please correct if out of order.
We're trying to trace back my ancestor, Elizabeth Ross. This is a long shot given the popularity of the name. We have her marriage certificate for August 1st 1871 to James Hudson Ashton, when she was 23 and he was 29 and a captain in the merchant service. They were married at Trinity Church, Paddington. His father was William Ahston (deceased), hers was John Ross, farmer. Witnesses were Maria Octavia Ashton, and D.G. Ross. Ashton's address was in Kingston upon Hull; hers was given as 10 Celbridge Place, which from census records appears to have been a lodging house of some kind. WE assume that she left Scotland at some stage. There is another relative named, an aunt Rebecca Dogherty, with connections to South Shilds and to Paddington, but we have no way of knowing whether she is an aunt on the Ross side or the Ashton branch.
We have reliable information about the Ashtons but would like to track Elizabeth further back. The mose intriguing information is that she describes herself as 'Alness resident' in the 'where born' section of the 1911 census. We have trawled the data but can't find a John Ross with a daughter Elizabeth in the Alness area at the relevant time. Nor can we identify a gravestone that might tally.
Any suggestions how we proceed most gratefully received,
Bruce
