Hi Whenu, another great site  because I think I may have brought up his record.  There are a number with his name, and in one or two things that I have come across for him, he seems to have adopted a middle name...but in fact his birth certificate in Ireland didnt.  Anyhow because he really had no kin in New Zealand at the time, he put a c/- address at that appears to be Waimate/Waihao Forks as I previously was aware he was from/spent time.  It says 42nd Reinforcements A Company embarkation Unit - 1914-1918 destination London.  Just can't figure that a approx. 45 would be called up.  Anyhow, will have to keep an open mind over this!
Thanks
Max.
Hi max,

Could you provide us with the name of the ancestor in the photo, please?

And just to clarify, the Royal Artillery and the Royal NZ Artillery used the same regimental badge on their uniform. I wasn't suggesting that your ancestor was in the Royal Artillery but could have been in the latter.

Hi Spades,  The ancestor's name is James Forrest, but I think appears in the cenotaph base as James William Forrest and some other piece of paper we have had James Willliam Forrest, so I am trying to make it fit!  In the photo he is the "Hitler"-moustached one - seated second from the right - the other chap looking somewhat like his twin.  In the Cenotaph information it gives nominal roll numbers of 88 and 4 but whether that is of any use.  I see that the personnel file is restricted access.  42nd Reinforcements A company - whether that means much again - but no doubt there will be information on that company.

Regards.
Max.

Hi Janette, just posted a reply to Spades with his name, James (William) FORREST but by his birth certificate James Forrest.  There is a James Forrest on the cenotaph site but ruled him  out because the next of kin was New Zealand whereas my ancestor's kin were Dublin (and they were deceased by then).

Thanks.
Max.

Hi Max,

A lot of the WW1 files at Archives have restricted on them, but they still digitise them without the restricted bits ;D I may be worth putting a new thread on the board asking for a Wellington Archives WW1 file to be digitised

Cheers Janette

Hi Max,

I wonder if they have come back for WW1 and may have been in hospital, the man second from the left sitting down looks like he may have his right forearm missing and the man back left looks as though he may have problems with his eyes,a couple of the others don't look too robust either,

Cheers Janette

It's ok Max, I'll look for an Archives file for you. Just be patient as there's quite a few queries in front of you.

Thanks for posting a name.
