de medio Templo - COMPLETED
« on: Sunday 20 February 11 05:32 GMT (UK) »
Can someone please interpret the following "de medio Templo" as appears in "The Visitations of Cornwall: Comprising The Heralds’ Visitations of 1530, 1573, & 1620.”

Thomas HOBLYN, 2 fil. de medio Templo London, aetat. 25, of Trewhella, Town Clerk of Bodmin 1636, an Arbitrator of his brother’s will 1653.

My guess is that "medio Templo" might be a minister of religion, but that is only a guess.

Regards
Grantley

Hi there,

Could it be the Middle Temple or something like that.

Of the Middle Temple. One of the four Inns of Court in London,
Lincoln's Inn, Gray's Inn, Middle Temple and Inner Temple.

That would probably make him a barrister, or whatever they were
called in those days.

My Latin is rather disgusting, at best.

Your suggestion led me to find a reference to a book;
"Contemporary ms. ex libris on title of 'Willus Hall de medio templo' i.e. a barrister of the Middle Temple in London, for whom the work was probably bound, occasional early marginalia."

In my past research, I had come across the Inns of Court, but I didn't recall it for this family.

Thankyou, regards
Grantley
