Help identify date and place of birth please

I am struggling to identify the date and place of birth of my grandfather William Weir.  He was said to have been born in, or lived at, Arthur Street, Edinburgh.  In 1906 he marries Jane Elmer in St. Georges, Hanover Square London. His 1914 regimental number was M2/033659.

I'm new to genealogy and would appreciate some help.  As William Weir is such a common name, is there any way of identifying his birth date and place of birth?

You would need to buy a copy of the 1906 marriage cert to establish his fathers name and occupation

Have you checked for him on the 1911 census to establish his birthyear and exact birthplace

The only 1911 index entry that fits his name and a birthplace of Scotland and a Jane in the same household shows a birthyear of 1871.  They were living in Fulham London 

2 children - William D aged 4  and Edward J aged 2 and Jane was 26

The Scottish 1881 census has 26 entries for William Weir b 1870-1872

Only one in Edinburgh - b 1872 mother Jessie

You really need the marriage cert for confirmation but this may possibly be his parents.  The 1881 has a daughter Robina aged 10 b Edinburgh and Jessie is shown as "masons wife"
