Luther HORSFALL 1861 Halifax
« on: Saturday 19 February 11 15:48 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I would appreciate any sightings of Luther Melancthon HORSFALL, born 1858 in Halifax, in 1861 or 1871. I am hoping he is to be found at home with similarly spectacularly named parents!

Whoops sorry forgot the Milancthon part!
We have one or two instances in our family where when the son finally arrived he was lavished with unusual names.

A Doffer is someone who removes the full bobbins from a machine.   I thought I'd come across this before and found amongst my mothers family who were Lancashire cotton workers.

Hope this helps

Hi,
Luther's occupation will be that of a 'doffer', who removed the full bobbins from ring spinning frames.
Going just by the index, he appears in every census, in 1911 he is Luther Melanethan Horsfall.

Rafter.

As CaroleW said, the original birth index clearly says Luther Melanchton Horsfall. Are we suffering from dodgy transcriptions? Has anyone seen the original census forms?
