Hi

I am very grateful to everyone who has contributed to this topic.

The spelling as in the BMD index may be a dodgy transcription, or it may be a mistake on the part of the original registrar on being confronted with the unfamiliar name!

Philip(p) Melancthon was a theologian of the German reformation, and an associate of Martin Luther. I guess I'm unlikely to find Luther HORSFALL's baptism in a C of E church!

Regards,

1861 census is Melanchton

1871 census is Milanchton  there is a definite dot over the 'i'

The handwriting is clear on both forms.
1881.1891.1901 he is recorded as Luther M

1911 census Melanethan  and it is in his own handwriting which is easy to read both in the name entry and in his signature so the others must be transcription errors I suppose

I think the 1911 census form does say Melancthon. Hard to tell whether it's an "e" or a "c" but I'd give him the benefit of the doubt as it's his own name!
