Thomas MAWBEY in Victoria - 1840s
« on: Saturday 19 February 11 11:19 GMT (UK) »
Dear rootschatters

I have been hugely helped recently with a lot of information about Henry MAWBEY and William MAWBEY - both in Victoria in the 1840s.

I have now found references to another person with the same surname - Thomas MAWBEY - who was assigned to undertake Jury Service for the Supreme Court on Tuesday 20 Aug 1844.  It also appears that he and his wife Mary baptised a son name Thomas on 08 Feb 1846 and William on 26 Sep 1847, both at St James's old church in Melbourne.

Can anyone identify what became of Thomas and Mary, or where they may have come from?

Any help would be gratefully received.

Many thanks

Philip Candy

This is fantastic, thank you very much for this wonderful information.

I will enter all this into my data base, but it seems pretty certain that this is a different branch of the family from the others, who seem to have originated in or near Surrey.

Thanks for finding them hiding under the variant spelling of MAWBY!

Kind regards

Phil

Phil,

NLA newspapers have 238 MAWBY references in Victoria (use the filter at the side)  including the funeral notices mentioned by Cando.  Some of the other refs are the same family and I think some of them may be your other family.

Many thanks for this Judith. The National Library collection of scanned newspapers is a wonderful resource, and I have found it often adds colour and detail to the information available in official sources.

As you will have found, however, the Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software doesn't see exactly what the human eye does, and so depending on the clarity of the original image, you sometimes need to search using a variety of search terms to identify the items you are seeking. Still, it's hugely satisfying to see an entry - especially an obituary or editorial article - appear on the screen.

Good luck with your research.

Kind regards

Phil Candy

Hello Denis

I am related to Francis John CANDY; he is my great grandfather.

I am descended from his youngest child - Edwin Carne CANDY - where the middle name CARNE came down through Fanny SANDO's father Joseph Carne SANDO.

Let me know if you need any further information.

Kind regards

Philip Candy
