Rippon of Durham
« on: Saturday 19 February 11 10:13 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find information about Thomas Rippon, his wife Elizabeth Hodgson (they were married in Brancepeth 1776), and their 3 eldest children William bap. May 1778, Thomas bap. 1781 & Jane bap. 1783.  I am related to their next (and youngest?) child Robert Rippon bap. 1785.

Hi Hirdy,

IGI has a possible Elizabeth HODSHON Christened 19 April 1752, Brancepeth, Durham to JOHN/JANE
Sibling on same Batch CUTHBERT Hodgeson, 06 Oct 1745

John HODGSON Married Jane BURLINGSON 25 April 1744, Brancepeth, Durham
(Source Extracted Records IGI)

Trish,

That's a very strong possibility, particularly as it appears that the first born daughter was Jane (after Jane Hodgson).  I wonder if that means that I don't have all the children from the marriage, as I have no record of a John (after John Hodgson).

Although naming traditions are mostly followed there are exceptions and I have found that in my own Tree.
But yes there may be a John that has not been found.
I did find a Cuthbert Hodgson in the 1851 Census so that name may have been continued.
Have you seen the Tree that has Thomas RIPPON Christened 15 May 1739, Lancaster, Durham to ROBERT/ANN and dying 1803?

They have your Robert marrying Hannah WALTON.
Is this correct?
Now this is interesting as I found a possible Marriage on the IGI for Jane Rippon to Joseph WALTON 05 Nov 1801, Saint Nicholas, Durham, Durham
Could they have Married Siblings?

Trish,

I have not seen the family tree you refer to.  How can I see it?

There is a good possibility that siblings could have married.  I'll look at the IGI and census data for further evidence of this possibility.  Robert Rippon definitely married Hannah Walton (although I don't have any certificates).  The Walton name comes through the next generation of family with a Christopher Walton Rippon.
