ONWOOD
« on: Friday 18 February 11 18:16 GMT (UK) »
Not sure if this is the correct place but...........

During the research of my wife's family tree we have come across the surname ONWOOD.

This name does not appear in the BDMs until 1917. First marriage is for a Leopold A. ONWOOD.which is the one I am looking at.
Prior to 1917 there is not mention of the ONWOOD name in any census records for the UK.

[NOTE: Some do appear in the 1891 and 1911 census but these are transcription errors for the name Ormerod]

Apart from Leopold (b. about 1874 - this from his death record) there are references in the Marriage index around the end od WW1 of three more ONWOODs.

My suspicion is that this family came to the UK before or during WW1 and changed their name to Anglisise it.

Does any one know if there are any research resources that can help to find if this is true ?

Hi Cotswolder,

Any idea what his middle name was? Someone on ancestry has the family as Aufholz initially, which Onwood would be the literal translation of.

1891 census RG12/185 120 43

What does his marriage cert say about his father?

 :)

The London Gazette finds a few Aufholz who changed their name - mostly to Attwood, it seems.

Many thanks Tati,

I thought Aufholz might be the correct family but was not sure. Have done some more looking and it would seem that Leopold Aufholz b 1875 is the correct one. Have found him in 1891(as you say) and 1901 & 1911 married with children. His 1st wife dies in 1913 which would tie up with his marriage into my wife's family in 1917.

Need to do more nut this looks like the right track.

I will check out the Ancestry Family trees.

Regards, Bruce

Hi,

I recently have been researching my Mothers Grandfather "Sidney Aufholz".  His brother is the Leopold you are looking for.  You need to go into Mundia.com  It is free and there is a woman that has done your wives family tree (Here name is Angela).  Leopold was her grandfather and changed his name to Attwood or Onwood from Aufholz.  This woman has worked very hard on the Aufholz family tree to no avail.  Its almost like the name came out of nowhere and every reference to the name is related on the family tree.  Leopold & Sidney had many siblings and their father was Julius Auhfholz married to Sarah Rothschild.  I am still digging in to find out more on the family.  Sidney (my great grandfather) came over to the US around 1905 when his wife Florence was pregnant w/my grandmother. I am not aware of when or if any of the siblings came over to the US.. The Aufholz's came to Islington, UK from Offenbach, Germany.  Hope this helps you on your quest!  Say HI to your wife, we are distant relatives ;-)  We hale from Indiana (but I now live in Oregon).  Lisa ;-)
