Hiya Doug,

I've a little mystery in the 1852 Directory of Belfast and Province of Ulster.
I looked for the surname Disney. There was only the one in Belfast.
Miss Disney, 28, College Street. I did not check the other towns

Chris

Hello Doug,

What denomination was you great grandmother? Was she a  member of the Catholic faith, the Established Church (Anglicans or Church of Ireland), a Methodist or  a member of the Presbyterian Church?

You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

Christopher

My GGMother Katherine Disney left Sligo Ireland and made it to NSW sometime around 1840? had 10 children to James Fines and settled in the Bathurst area she was not listed as a convict. James finally married Katherine  3 weeks before he died in 1866. She remarried and is buried in the Bathurst cem. as Katherine Cott. out of the 10 children seven girls and three were boys all the boys died in infancy

Are you hoping to find information on Katherine Disney in Sligo (your post doesn't mention what you are looking for)? If so, it will be difficult as civil registration in Ireland began well after Katherine arrived in Australia. For such an early date you need to search for church records, if they exist, but you'll need to know her religion and where she lived (parish if not actual townland) in Sligo (Sligo is both a county and a town). Do her Australian death certificate or two marriage certificates give any clues?

Since you have an approxiamate year of birth and parents' names you need to know where they lived in order to start searching for church records.

Just had a look at index to Irish civil registrations in case Katherine's parents remained in Ireland and died after 1864 bt there is no Daniel Disney in the index (so it looks like he either died before 1864 or died outside Ireland) and there are not even any Disney's registered in Co. Sligo (births, deaths or marriages).

However, I did find the marriage of Daniel Disney and Mary Campbell listed in IGI (www.familysearch.org). It's from the "Parochial registers of Tawnagh and Riverstown (Sligo), 1803-1881  Catholic Church. Parish of Tawnagh and Riverstown (Sligo)" and you can check the online catalogue on LDS site to see records have been microfilmed for that church (although marriages usually took place in bride's church so there is a chance that's not the church the Disneys attended).
