Crew List for the Larkins
« Reply #9 on: Tuesday 15 February 11 02:03 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
First time user. I am looking for the  original Crew  list for the ship "Larkins" that departed from London June 1849 and arrived into Port Chalmers New Zealand September 1849
My GG Grandfather was on this ship as a crew member, had a shipboard romance with a Margaret Ann Duff and on arrival into Port Chalmers jumped ship and changed his name to Lewis Edwards. We think he may have been  Lars Peterson originally from Sweden. They did get married.

Would any one be able to help.
Many thanks

PS I had posted this on NZ board last year.

Hi Lochanora :)

Your man is listed at the site linked to on your previous thread - shown as Lewis Edwards:
Edwards, Lewis [crew; m. Margaret née Duff (ex Larkins); d. 10/10/1873].

Thank you Prue,
That was me also but I had no luck tracking down a crew list. I have the passenger list for the Larkins. The brick wall is that we do not know if he signed on as Lewis (Louis) Edwards or as Lars Peterson (Pederson). If we can find the answer then we may be able to trace him back further.

Cheers

Hi Lochanora,

Sorry, I'm not quite getting it (mid afternoon brain slump!) - do you mean that you submitted the information about Lewis Edwards to that website?

What makes you think he might be Lars Peterson, do you have some other information about him?

Cheers
Prue

Hi Prue,
Yes I did post the query on the NZ message board last year but no one was able to come up with the crew list for the Larkins.
The family story goes that he was born in Sweden, maybe went to America and ended up in NZ. In the NZ Encyclopedia there is an article about one of his sons and in it he states that his father was from Sweden originally called Lars Peterson (Pederson)
We know that he arrived into Port Chalmers on the Larkins and believe that he was a crew member fell in love with Margaret Duff and jumped ship. I thought the crew list would be able to show me if he signed on as Lars Pederson or Louis Edwards. Once I know this I may be able to trace him back further. Heres hoping.
Cheers

Hi Lochanora :)

What I'm saying is that the list at http://www.ngaiopress.com/larklist.htm shows a crew member by the name of Lewis Edwards.  I'm not sure whether the person who compiled the list was looking at an original document or working from collated information from other sources, but it suggests to me that this man signed on to the crew as Lewis Edwards.

If he went to the USA first he may have changed his name on arrival there - have you considered this possibility?

Cheers
Prue

Hi Prue,

Just been and had a massage (very nice). This list was compiled from relatives and The Otago Early Settlers Museum. It is not an official passenger list and this is where the problem lies. The relatives have given his name as Louis (Lewis) Edwards but also say he was Lars Pederson. I thought by trying to get an official crew list it would help in finding out who he was when he left England.
Hope this makes sense.

Cheers
Lochanora :)

Ahh!  Well now it makes sense.

Sorry I can't really help further but I hope someone with more knowledge of NZ records might be able to point you to the original crew list, if it still exists.

Cheers

thanks Prue,

The only one that I possibly know of would be at the Kew Archives in England and I don't see me getting there anytime soon.

Thankyou for your input.

Cheers
