Larkins Crew and Passenger List 1849
« on: Saturday 31 October 09 00:29 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
First time user. I am looking for the Crew and Passenger list for the ship "Larkins" that departed from London June 1849 and arrived into Port Chalmers New Zealand September 1849
My GG Grandfather was on this ship as a crew member, had a shipboard romance with a Margaret Ann Duff and on arrival into Port Chalmers jumped ship and changed his name to Lewis Edwards. We think he may have been  Lars Peterson originally from Sweden. They did get married.

Would any one be able to help.
Many thanks

Thanks Jan, I have looked as this but unfortunatly it doesn't show the crew and I thinks some of the passengers are missing as well.

You could also try emailing the Hocken Library, Dunedin they may have a passenger list.

Thank you Althea,
I had seen this list before and found there was no crew mentioned. We are at a stanstill with this line until we can find some hard facts as to who the GG Grandfather was. I may need someone to search The National Archives in Kew England for me.

Hello Lochanora,

I have had a look at a few shipping sites, there does not seem to be many lists of passengers before 1850. I couldn't find the "Larkins". When I was searching for a list a very kind rootschatter looked on a paid site for me for passengers departing the UK, perhaps if you also post this on another board maybe beginners someone may be able to help.  However I don't know how far back the records go, someone else may know. My ancestor was on a much later ship than yours.

If you post again don't forget to mention you have already posted on the NZ board.

Good luck

I too am looking for a crew list for this ship, also possibly relating to a shipboard romance between passenger Margaret Beattie (on the list) and Peter Heywood Thomson, rumoured to have been crew. We know they married in Port Chalmers, but how did he get to NZ is the question. Did you find a crew list for the Larkins?
cheers,J

Hi john500t, no luck in finding a crew list as yet. I did contact the National Archives in Kew England and they gave me a reference to look at but as I live in NZ it won't be anytime soon.
Have you seen this Larkins listing on this site
www.ngaiopress.com/larklist.htm
I see your Margaret is on there as a teacher. It's interesting that my  other GG grandfather was James Beattie born about 1820 in County Down Ireland, arrived in NZ 1861 after working in Australia and California in the goldfields. he married  a Margaret Ann Whiteside who was also from County Down in 1863. They had a daughter Margaret Ann Beattie and she married Thomas Edwards the son of my other GG grandparents.
Good luck in your search and if I ever find anything I will be sure to let you know.
Regards
