New Zealand PO Directory 1894-95

Do you know what brought Jemima to NZ, I see in the 1867 Directory there was a  Peter Hoey residing at North East Valley Rd as a farrier, could he have been Thomas's brother or relative and Jemima moved to NZ with her children after Thomas had died to be near family?  Just a wild theory.

New Zealand Electoral Roll.

Many thanks, Gerry, for the PO Directory information. Great!

I don't really know why Jemima Nena Macbeth came to Australia and New Zealand.

Quite a few of her siblings came over too. Her elder sisters Agnes Macbeth & Elisabeth Macbeth had married the same man (Daniel Robertson) as 1st & 2nd wife. After the wives died Daniel emigrated with his surviving children by both wives; Her brothers William Nicol Macbeth and John James macbeth went to N. Z; and yet another elder sister Barbara Macbeth married a seaman called Alexander Leslie.  They had 4 children Alex, Mary, James & Janet born between 1852 & 1865. I can't find them in Scotland after 1871, so I've a feeling they might have gone to Oz or NZ too. They're still under investigation!

Thanks again,

Craig

Craig,

I see Alexander & Barabara on the 1871 Census and here is a couple of possibilities for Alexander Leslie but it was a fairly common name though.

I see an Alexander Leslie 2nd Mate, 32 from Aberdeen was on board the "Sarah Grice" arriving in Sydney on 16th October 1871 from London.

From the The Sydney Morning Herald (NSW : 1842-1954 Thursday 12 November 1857, p2.
A seaman Alexander Leslie was fined 10/- for being drunk & disorderly aboard the "Nimrod".

Leslie's parent's seem to have been doing well being a ship owner and plenty of servants etc in the 1861 Census.

Hi Gerry,

Thanks for that info.  I'll follow up that Alex Leslie arriving at Sydney in 1871.

Hi there,

I know this is an old thread, but I got interested in it because it mentioned Naracoorte - which is where I'm from. I just thought I'd let you know that there's still at least one family of Blackwells there that I know of. Derek Blackwell is the principal of the Naracoorte South Primary School. I don't know if you're interested in that kind of information. You can probably find him in the WhitePages though.

Cheers,
Ande

I'm a Great Great Granddaughter of John Barrett Blackwell. His son Alec was my Great Grandfather, his son John was the father of my father, Donald John. We don't know much about his family. I'm amazed to see so many siblings. Alec fought in WW1 and suffered a lot from his injuries (he was gassed in France). He developed a Parkinson's like disease due to the nerve damage he had sustained - I believe. His wife was (Winifred) Doris Bradshaw. They had three children; John, Bob and Margaret.
