Oh my... I only just found this so sorry for being so late.

Right, the first thing you need to know is the English ancestors of this Boss family were Romany Gypsies.

Riley Boss or Boswell c.1798 s/o Elisha Boswell & Zuha (reputedly Seni Boss) was married at least 3 times, and died in 1850 at Kensington (a place known then as The Potteries, a gypsy encampment, now known as Notting Hill.) Story goes Riley cut his hand skinning a Rabbit and got blood poisoning and died. He had previously travelled Lincolnshire, Yorkshire and as far west as Warwickshire and as far south as Suffolk. Quite a reasonable sized area for gypsies of the time. Remember this is pre wagon days, when gypsies travelled with horses and donkeys and lived in Bender Tents.
Anyway, polygamy was totally acceptable in the Romany Gypsy world in those days, and Riley had at least three wives.
They were: Charlotte Hammond, Lucy Boswell, and Susan "Shurensi" Smith. This last woman was often called Yoki Shuri.
Of the three, Lucy Boswell got out of the relationship and emigrated to the USA with some of her offspring. Susan "Shurensi" died in Hull in 1868, and Charlotte Hammond, which is the important wife in this particular Boss story, left Riley and went off with Zachariah Lee, By whom she had several other children.

Charlotte Hammond provided Riley with the following children:

Robert c.1817 Milverton Warwickshire
Charles b.circa 1815 (not found)
Delorania c.1820 Woolpit Sfk
Elias b.1826 Sudbourne Sussex - (baptised as Golias but never seems to use the name again)

Of these, all three men were tried for Horse Stealing. Robert and Charles, together in 1835 at Norfolk Assizes, and Elias with John Budd Gray in 1844 at Lincoln Assizes.
Their sister Delorania managed to stay out of trouble and married Aaron Heron also known as Young.

Robert and Charles ended up in Portsmouth on Prison Hulks (the Hardy and the Leviathan respectively) prior to their transportation in 1836 on the ship "Recovery". Charles died soon after arrival on the 1st Oct 1836.

Robert (who died 14 Jan 1904) went on to marry Elizabeth Letitia Rex (1822 Somerset-1887 Carcoar) they had a large family:

Matilda Mary Jane m. John MacClosky
Isabella Elizabeth m. William Fletcher
Elizabeth Letitia m. Thomas Joseph Smith
Emily Emmeline m. Daniel Charters
Jane Agnes m. John Shandley Hogan
Charles Robert Frederick m. Christiana Chesher
George Thomas m. Ellen Mary Obrien
Noah Robert m. Kate Harvey
Mary Ann m. Alfred Henry
Charlotte Ellen m. Michael J Chew
Elias William m. Catherine Chew
Samuel Owen d.1891
Arthur Joseph m. Esther Alice Purcell
Edward Victor 1870-1870

Now Elias Williams children were:

Florence E m. Michael Joseph Obrien
Herbert Hector m. Lila Pearl Wilson
Julia A C m. James T Newland
Isabella D
Mary Evaline J m. James M Picker
Robert Bannister d.1918 France killed in Action.

Finally, a little about Elias Boss the brother who was transported in 1844 - in Tasmania he married Frances Bonney, and their children were:

Delorania Bertha m. Henry Bish
Deliah Mary m. Albert John Watson
Caroline Lavinia
Elias Sylvester James
Lapoleons Rebbi Charles
May Ellie Rubina.

No Im not directly descended from any of them, I researched them out of pure fascination through being very very distantly related by the marriage of Riley and Susans dtr Susan who married Pasthomas Gray, the nephew of the John Budd Gray who went over the seas with Elias.

Hope it helps a bit :)

Oh a bit more abt the convoluted and extended family:

Charlotte Hammond (reputedly d/o Antony Hammond and Paizi Heron) b.cir 1798 later married Zachariah Lee.
This Zachariah was transported in 1835 with his brother Major Lee (for the same crime as Robert & Charles Boss), and he died in 1847 Summerhill NSW

He and Charlotte had

Vashti (Wasti) Lee who married Johnny Gray (son of John Budd Gray)
Lavinia who married Oliver Cooper
and Eliza married Matthew Cooper.

 -------------------------------------------

Other half siblings of Robert & Charles were by Riley Bosses other two wives.

By Lucy Boswell there was:

Sylvester m. Notavena Smith (went to USA)
Naomi m. Joseph Crabtree (m1865 and reputedly died young)
Isaac "Haggi" m.Mary Smith - he was transported but managed to come back to England. His daughter Maud was born in Australia in 1883, and returned with him.
Elizabeth m. Phoenix Taylor
Mowellus (went to the USA)
Nelson m. Sophia Heron
Samson m. Susie Gray (went to USA, where he married Janie Rowells in 1883)

By Susan "Shurensi" Smith:

Louis m. Alice Gray and later Rachel Lee
Shurensa Desibersa m. Frampton Heron
Brittania m. William Wilson (she died in 1849)
Newcombe m. Angelina Smith
Deliah Wilhelmina m. George Wilson
Susan m. Pasthomas/Posthumus Gray s/o Piramus brother of John Budd Gray
Agnes (spinster of Hull, Yorkshire)
Penelly (no other info apart from her bapt in 1837 at Winteringham Lincs)
Narroly/Harroly (reputedly died young)
Siara/Seara m. William James Boustead a fisherman at Hull.

This is extensive information. It is not easy keeping the Boss/Boswells straight. After Samson Boss came to America in abt 1883 and he married Jane Rowells wouldn't she be the mother of Delilah rather than his first wife Susie Gray? The Daughter Delila went on to marry Joseph young son of Frampton Young.(sometimes went by Fred Hearn??)
Can anyone tell me more about Delilah,Joseph and the Young's. Joseph and Delilah are my great grandparents I have found out.
Thank you,
Colleen A
Thank you

Is this Frampton and Otta young who came to America (see partial passenger list below)the same one who Married Desibersa Boswell that you mention? Is this Otta also Desibersa? In Their son Joe Young's death record Illinois( 1933) she is Louise Smith? It says Frampton Young and Louise Smith were born in England and their son Joe Young's Wife was Delilah Boss. Just need help figuring out who Joe Young's mother was.
Thanks, Colleen

SS Neptune 9th August 1855 A large family of Young
* Gypsies* arrived in America from Liverpool

Frampton Young ..........1832 -23
Otta Young ..............1831 -24

Janie Rowells married in 1883 Tallapoosa Alabama, but Deliah according to my records was born 1869 Ohio which would make her Susie Grays daughter.

Cant say for certain.I dont have many USA records and none for Framptons children. All I know is according to the Heron and Boss pedigrees (Journals of the Gypsy Lore Society) Frampton married a "Separai Boss, daughter of Riley and Shurensi (Susan Smith) Boss. The only daughter of this pair not accounted for was the Shuransa Desibera c.1825 Bramford Suffolk, so I am presuming until proved otherwise its her. I cannot say if Frampton had any more wives after he left for the USA, this is all I know.

ZACHARIAH LEE / CHARLOTTE HAMMOND

Hi, referenced above is the detail of Zachariah Lee & Charlotte Hammond parenting Vashti / Lavinia and Eliza.

Can I ask where this information was sourced from?

It's true Oliver Coopers second partner was a Lavinia Lee proven by the birth certificate of one of their children, the rest I haven't looked into to confirm but the Convict Indent for Zachariah states he was married at the time of his 'departure' and father to two girls, not three - perhaps if the above is correct Eliza was in the oven at the time he was convicted.

Is there any information as to what happened to Charlotte Hammond or a baptism for her?
