Richard Johnson 1803 - Ballycastle, May0
« on: Wednesday 16 February 11 20:10 GMT (UK) »
Hello all
I am looking for info on Great Grandfather Richard Johnson,
born 1803 in Ballycastle, Mayo - stonemason.

Married Catherine Mary Finnegan (1823) (Sullivan was 1st husband) who was a widow.
They married in Sullyhalline (?), Muckno Parish, Monaghan about 1845.
I am looking for Catherine Finnegan's place of birth, marriage records, etc.
and clarification of Sullyhalline would be helpful as I cannot find that name.

Richard + Catherine along with Richard's brother Felix emigrated to Hyde Park, Boston suburb, between 1845-1850. They then moved to Brookline, MA where the entire family stayed. Richard and Felix were stonemasons and started a construction firm in Brookline, MA. Son's joined the firm which built some of the largest churches, schools, and public works projects in MA until 1930's.

Richard's father was also named Richard Johnson and his mother was Catherine ------per his obit.

I would like to know more about them and about Richard (GGGfather) and Catherine (GGGmother).  Family history says GGGfather Richard emigrated from Stavenger, Norway and was also a stone mason who came to Ireland to build churches....

Any information you all can offer would be very much appreciated!

Hello and welcome to Rootschat  :)

Looking at Irish townlands http://www.thecore.com/seanruad/
there are no places beginning with 'Sully..' but several places which begin with 'Tully..'  e.g. there is a Tullynahattina. None of them are quite similar though.

Here is information about searching Irish records
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,442233.0.html

but your searches are very early. There are Mayo resources here:

best wishes

Thank you Heywood
I have been using all the online search sources you have noted - thank you - but my dates are prior to most of their records.

Would you have any other suggestions? I do appreciate your help!

I was hoping perhaps someone else was researching the same family from the Irish side and we might connect here.

Thank you again for your kind and helpful response. I will keep you posted if I find out more!
warm regards
Ro
